When the first Pale Ales were sailed around the Cape to arrive in India in the early 18th century, outcries of “Zounds! Jolly good! and Huzzah!” were heard across the East Indian subcontinent. Similar exclamations are to be expected when sniffing the piney aroma and tasting the big hops, huge citrus and candy-like malt of Pfriem’s own IPA. Drink up, Guv’nor.

After trudging through years in a sea awash in forgettable NW IPA’s I found this at my local grocery store. And I’m now a reborn IPA lover! In short, the closest copy of Piny the Elder I’ve found. Perfect hoppy and sweet aroma matched by an intense floral hop and malty taste. But not syrupy or overly bitter. Excellent attenuation in the ferment but just enough residual sugar remaining. Crips yet a hefty gravity. Bravo my man. Bravo. Just spectacular. And 3.99/bottle at three stores in walking distance from my house - this beer is a gift from the hop gods. Thank you.

Light gold, fresh grapefruity, orangey nose, lean pale malts, lots of bitterness, fresh citrusy character, very good balance. Near perfect.

Bottle. Pours a hazy copper color with a moderate off-white head on there. Nose is floral and resiny and super hop-forward, and is just really inviting for the hop head. Taste is lightly bitter and a bit tingly with the afterburn of the hops. Really fresh and pleasantly crisp. NICE brew.

Bottle. Colour...hazy golden-orange with a thick white head. Nose...definitely on the piney side, as opposed to the grapefruity side, with conifer pitch and crushed pine needles. Palate...right away, the whole of the palate is awash in massively piney hops and tremendous opulence! The mouth is full and rich with flavours of star fruit, quince and kumquat and there is a deftly balanced finish to round it all out.

This IPA offers a no-nonsense approach to ultimate balance. Hops and Malt both express themselves in full measure. Beer is hoppy indeed, both at first taste and during the aftertaste the malt profile is consistently present. This is craft beer that exhibits the purest definition of "craft". pFriem is a significant contributor to the Oregon beer scene...and we, as consumers are the beneficiaries. That's sounds over the top no doubt...but as you enjoy one of their creations on a late summers day, such hyperbole issues forth with little effort. Find their beer. Drink it.

Judging by the description, pFriem IPA is an English interpretation of the style. However, this beer has an undeniably American character. The coloring is gold-orange. There is a lot of caramel malt, but the balance is clearly hop-forward. Piney and pithy flavors throughout with a long, bitter finish. Tasty.

Hazy blond color with compact persistent head. Peculiar aroma, very nice: it’s fruity, grapey, possibly also cheesy (goat cheese). The lean pale malt body is a great choice, still it conveys quality; hop explosion, very resiny, bitter, quite fruity and piney.
Great, straight, modern IPA.

Perfect modern east coast IPA with west coast brains. Juicy but still west coast pine. This may be the perfect IPA? Nose is nice but could use some improvement. Sweet ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Waddell’s. A glassy apricot color with just an etched top of foam. Smells like grapefruit, some other citrus, a little peach, but mostly like grapefruit. Flavor is nice and bitter with a solid hoppy flavor, plenty more of that grapefruit, some lighter bready malts, good bitter finish. Really solid tasting beer for me. Medium bodied with moderate on hi carb that offers a slight burn then finishes wet. I like this beer, I think it is a quintessential PNW IPA. Just refreshing to get away from he Citra, maltodextrin, sweet East Coast style going around.

500 ml bottle, one of those awesome new ones. Looks amazing. Pours a bight copper color with a medium white head. A big dank fruity hop nose. The flavor is resin, huge dank fresh hops, caramel, candied oranges, pine. Very flavorful, the intensity is there, but this is smooth as well. Really a lot like Pliny. Wow! Blown away. Oranges, more dankness. Bitterness mixed with sweet bursting hops. Lovely.
