On tap @ Phantom Canyon poured a clear dark brown with a minimal ring of tan foam. Aromas of peat, smoke, dark chocolate, roastness and light coffee. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. UPDATED: JUN 20, 2008 Re-rate on 6/20/08. Pours opaque with a small, frothy, light brown head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (coffee, roasted, burnt), light hops (grass), average yeast (leather) with notes of smoke and charcoal. Medium bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness and acidity, moderate bitterness.

UPDATED: JUN 7, 2012 Cask @ PC. Dark brown appearance with a light brown head. Roasty, chocolate malty, lightly smoked aroma. Low carbonation. Pour on tap at the brewery, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of earth, peaty notes with some slight smoke but this part was restrained, more biscuit and bready yeast, spice, some cocoa and coffee notes, lots of roasted malts as well. Taste is restrained on the peat but that worked for me, some cocoa, biscuit, bread, some hints of caramel, nutty notes, roasted malt finishes it off with a fairly bitter and dry finish. Draught. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain), moderately hoppy (grapefruit), lightly yeasty (dough). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter, lightly acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. The aroma is too hoppy for me, but it doesn’t mar the flavor profile.

Dark amber in colour, a pretty dark shade of brown when held up to a light. A thin tan head develops on the pour and lasts for a while. This was definately contained in Nitrogen before, as its characteristics are very noticeable. Sweet and roasty malt aroma, with some of the sweetness smelling like caramel and root beer. Roasty malt flavour, very watery (some nitrogens will do this) with some smoked flavours, but not much. Finishes with a malt-bitterness. Not a great smoked beer, nor porter. I don't know how this one a silver medal at the GABF in 1994, but maybe they changed their recipe a bit or maybe there were only two contestants for the Smoked category 9 years ago :-)...I was only 13 at the time as well! Tap. Pours deep, dark brown with average, creamy tan head; good retention and decent lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, earthy hops, and dates. Flavor is light roast malt, dark fruit esters, and light earthy hops with faint caramel and cinnamon; dry finish. The peat isn’t as strong as I’d like, but its there and its nice. Dark and roasted. Some lingering sweetness.
