Traditionally Baltic Porters were brewed with a higher alcohol level to help thier passage to the North Sea. Instead of shipping beer across the ocean we shipped in our friends from Nova Scotias Garrison Brewing to collaboare on a second incarnation of a coast to coast beer.

Pleasantly sweet blend of chocolate, roast and hickory in the sweet aroma reminiscent of wafer cookies. Opaque, dark brown body is topped by a decent cream coloured head that recedes to a thin cover with scant lacing. Flavour follows the aroma though the sweetness is extreme and theres something a bit vegetal in the aftertaste. Medium-full body with fair carbonation that seems just a bit flaccid. Not undrinkable, but not really inspiring either. Tulip glass. Fridge temperature. Bottle purchased at Brewery Creek in May (?) 2012.

Thanks to reimer for this. Pours silky black with a smal, quickly disappearing dark brown head. Aroma is bitter chocolate, roasted malts. Taste is smoth roasted malt, bitter chocolate and small hop. Very enjoyable but would like some more body.

Pours a very dark brown colour with moderate tan head leaving small lace and dissolving to a thin ring around the glass. Aroma is roasted malts, sweet malts, chocolate, light dark fruit, light warm alcohol(once it warms up), and woody. Flavours are Sweet malt, dried dark fruits, rosted malts, coffee and a mildly dry finish. Body seems to be a little thinner than i expected for the style.

Pours a dark brown and a tan head. Aroma of sweet chocolate, roasted malts & a woody aroma. Taste is sweet chocolate, roast malts, nutty and woody type flavor that doesnt blend too well. Overall this is too sweet and too thin for the style. Also has a bit of a harsh bitterness on the finish that tastes like old wood. Love the idea of the mash up but hope they can come up with something better especially for such a respectable style.

Bottle. Pours black with a small off white head. Aroma of roasted malts, some dark chocolate, vanilla. Flavour of the same - very dark. Better than I expected. Medium to full bodied. Roasted.

Meh. Nothing exciting here, was hoping for better from two very good breweries. Not much here, some raisin and dark fruits. Medium to big sweet. Pours black no head at all.

Bottle. Very dark brown with copper highlights and a tan head that doesnt lace. Character is dominated by roast and chocolate, and is marred by a lack of depth of flavour, a thin body, and odd new wood and mineral traits that clash. It finishes with quite a firm, pithy bitterness. Too much bitterness, not enough malty richness, and not nearly enough complexity of character. I am so pleased to see collaboration between our brewmasters here in Canada, but this failed to capture any of the key elements of a style I happen to love. Calling this a baltic porter is like calling a blade steak a filet mignon. If this is truly the inaugural launch of a "Mash-up Series" (and I hope it is!), I hope they continue the creativity, but elevate the quality.

Bottle from Tobys on Commercial Dr., Vancouver
Black color, with small and short lived head. Dusty aroma of roasted malt, some cardboard, grains. The mouthfeel is not too weak, but the body is thin for a Baltic Porter at this gravity; dark caramel and mildly roasted malt flavor, with notes of liquorice and grains; ordinary bitterness.

Single bottle purchased from Zyn Liqour in Calgary, AB on 02/05/2012. Colour: Dark chocolate brown with a swirl of purple and almost no head. Nose: Swirling caramel and toffee come on strong. Coffee liquer follows, as well as a hint of coconut and marshmellow. Taste: Medium sweet, medium-light bitter, medium-light sour. The caramel sweetness appears first again, followed by a vanilla-coffee swirl in the middle. Vanilla continues through the finish but is joined by some pine and wood bitterness. Delightful.

Dark brown with reddish accents. The aroma hints at a thin, slightly nutty and slightly chocolatey brew. Slightly chocolatey on the palate as well, a little thin, and not really a Baltic, but its a dull strong porter.
