November 16, 2012 - on draught at Bar Hop as "Great Lakes x Phillips Puzzler" ... nearly black, ruby highlights, with a solid frothy tan head. Dry aroma - cocoa powder, alcohol, mint, table cream - a bit spicy, not all that bitter, some resin and grassy notes. Taste is very nicely balanced - solid non-thick non-sweet nutshell roast malt and a building herbal / dry grass bitterness - some alcohol. solid body, a little astringent, decent carbonation, starts burnt and malty, finishes mostly bitter, but could stand a little more hop aggression. Solid brew. mabel (9245) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 31, 2012
[4929-20121108] Tap. Light fruity toasted malt aroma has a bit of a toasted pumpkin seed note. Clear, dark dark mahogany brown body with a medium-lasting creamy tan head. Lightly roasted coffee malt flavour has a sweet toasted bread note and nice hoppy notes throughout. Medium-full body. Great. (8/4/8/4/17) 4.1

Thanks to Reimer for picking this up for me. Pours black with a big beige frothy top. Aroma of lightly roasted malts and citrus hops. Taste is a great balance of a nice porter with roasted malts, bitter chocolate and velvet mouthfeel and and citrus hop IPA. Great hop flavours and bitterness of citrus hops and finished with a nice dry palate. Great beer! gramity (1678) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - DEC 30, 2012
Black with thick, foamy head. Cedar smoke aroma with evergreen and doughy chewiness. Light sweetness balanced by strong, bitter hopping. Thick and full-bodied, moderate carbonation, long bitter hop finish. DuffMan (10602) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - DEC 24, 2012
UPDATED: JUL 30, 2014 Bottle. Well I’m glad I had the chance to revisit this one! My first rating from 2012 wasn’t very flattering and went against the grain. This brew shows a much better balance between the dark malts and the hops, and the hop profile is more assertive and bright, with ghostly yeasty undertones-- great beer!

Draught at ’Project X’ at Wvrst, Nov. 8. Pours a very dark amber-brown, almost black, with a small diminishing frothy tan head. Nice aroma of leafy hops first followed by lightly roasted malt and a hint of chocolate. Flavour is super hoppy with a very bitter finish -- It’s all about the hops. Medium bodied. Man, I did not expect this to be as hoppy it was. jmikolich (1477) - North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA - DEC 12, 2012
22oz bottle from Mcberko, Thanks! Dank and tropical in one? with toasty roast? crazy good, no detection of belgian yeast profile because the hops and toast taste just dominate but in a good way.. I’m really starting to dig black IPAs and this is a great one. TipsyMcStager (1139) - Calgary, Alberta, CANADA - DEC 8, 2012
Pours black with think tan head. Nice cascade hop aroma. Roastiness, with slight sweetness. Dry finish.

Crazy good. From the bottle the huge flower hop aroma surprised me. Then the pour was almost black with frothy beige head. Taste was mild bitter. Gerbeer (3896) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 29, 2012
650 ml bottle. Pours black with light white head. Aromas of pines, grapefruit, and roasted malts. Similar flavors reminiscent of a CDA or Black IPA plus coffee and chicory. Very nice.
