COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Crafted in collaboration with our friends at Great Lakes Brewing from Toronto, buckets of black malt give this beer a deep earthy-brown colour and a huge body. Generous portions of bittering hops add balance and tip the flavour profile definitively to the hoppy side of the scale, while Belgian yeast endows the collaborative brew with a slightly spicy undertone.

Editor’s note: initially at 9.1%, went to 7.3% in 2013

Tasted at GLB Movember Tap Takeover. Deep brown-black pour. The nose is a little bit hoppy and earthy. Intensely hoppy and bitter. Earthy chocolate and a bit of chewy bitterness. Very pithy bitterness that is almost excessive. I like it, but the bitterness could have been dialled back a touch.

(650ml bottle) Purchased at Hillside for $5.95. Pours a thin, frothy beige head atop a black body. Great yeasty and strong hop bitterness. Flavour Is nicely smooth, mildly chocolate with potent PNW hoppy front. Not terribly Belgian but one of the better non-IPAs from Phillips. Really enjoyable and quaffable. --- reviewed on RateBeer.com

Holy crap Batman!!! Just outrageously great! Pours a purely black in the body with a dense beige head. The nose is robust, intense, notes of dark chocoalte, roasted espresso, light citrus, floral estery Belgian notes big resin and pine. Overall, just an incredible nose. A bit sweet in the middle with a big robust malt, sweet hop and citrus notes. Robust and huge drying astringency on the finish. Well balanced....would have no idea this is 9.1%. Absolutely incredible brew..so complex and well balanced too.

multi servings at GL WVRST takeover. Black with almost no head. Wonderful aroams, the cascade and the roast in perfect harmony. Fuller mouthfeel, smooth. Hops, roast, in a great ale. Very good drinkability.

American election vs. catching up with The Voice. Can’t decide which one i want to be Prez or if the yeast improves or detracts from the Black IPA. Didn’t Phillips invent the style? Now they want to change/improve/re-interpret the style? Black with good lastingly clingy ghostly head. Aroma of dark malt twisted with Belgian yeast. Flavour is tasty dark malt, hops and yes the yeast does give it an enjoyable twist.

Bottle - Huge aroma with roasted malts and tons of hops. The citrus mixing with the malt gives it an unusual but pleasant aroma. Jet black with a lingering small brown head. A distinct bitterness that lingers well after and a citrus hop that is very forward. I can sense the yeast profile although it is subtle in the finish. Very rich and oily, a great cold weather beer but a bit one sided. I would have prefered more malts to balance.

Pours a thick black colour with a full and persistent head. Aromas of grapefruit hops, Belgian yeast, and dark malts. Taste is very stout-y with the malts, and the hops really round it out nicely. The alcohol can be tasted on the bitter finish. It’s too bad they only made one batch of this!

650ml brown bottle.. Deep brown pour, edges show some orange and ruby highlights. Tan head is creamy, tight bubbled, dense. Nose has some roasted malt, chocolate notes, hops. Taste has chocolate malts, earth, roast, citrusy hops. Finishes with earthy and roasty malts, dark chocolate hints, a lot of lingering hops. Aftertaste has grapefruity hops, earth and slight roast, soft chcolate, decent bitterness level. Medium body, regular carbonation. No real signs of any Belgian yeast here, and this doesn’t drink like a 9% beer... Overall, really enjoyable, good collab.

650ml bomber pours almost black in color with a huge off-white head that leaves some nice lacing as it settles. Aroma is roasted grains with chocolate and hop notes. Taste is a strong roasted grain bitterness with some hops as well balanced with a nice chocolate sweetness. Medium to heavy in body with some decent carbonation. Very well done and highly recommended.
