This pours a murky dark brown with a skinny tan head. The aroma is roasted malts, roasted barley, and a big splash of chocolate. Nice carbonation. The flavor is rich ’n’ roasty with chocolate and a bit of toffee. This has more ale qualitites than those of a Schwarzbier, but as Piece says, "It’s a dark bier." Not bad.Aurelius (5335) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - SEP 30, 2008

Rootbeer-looking in color, clarity and head. Ceral lager aroma. Deep, dark grainy malt flavors - sweetish - without much roast. A little chemical on the backend. hotstuff (5158) - Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA - FEB 20, 2005
Draft at Piece Brewery & Pizzeria. Small tan head that mostly diminished, fine-small sized bubbles, sparse lacing, opaque, and a dark brown hue. Aroma was malty, roasty, some chocolate, and smokey. Flavor was lightly hoppy and malty. Smooth palate. Medium body. Thorpe429 (5035) - , Illinois, USA - APR 13, 2011
Reviewed from notes.
Pours near black with a very thin head and not too much lacing. Nose is roasted malt and not much else. Taste has a light roast character with a hint of sweetness but is mostly pretty dry. Feel is light with good carbonation. Easy sipper but nothing is really there.

Mug served at the brewpub bar with a dark brown appearance and light ruby tones showing through. The head was a modest, off white to light tan with fair cling to the lacing. Everything about this beer was light. In the aroma, there was very subtle German malt scent, roasted notes as mocha and hints of sweetness and caramel. The flavor was similar, adding some low bitterness to the somewhat thin body. Subtly dry was the finish. A no frills, sessionable, black lager.

7/27/2010: Piece Dark Bier... Aroma: Milk chocolate with a splash of coffee. Appearance: Chesnut color; semi-opaque; no head. Flavor: Dark fruits (plum); gives way to chocolate and roasted and steeped grains; small herbal bitterness in the finish. Palate: Average. Overall: Finally, something a little interesting...
Draught (5% ABV) at Piece in Chicago. Rating #49 for this beer.
Growler. Poured a clear dark brown color with dark orange highlights. The head was tan. Smelled of unsweetened chocolate brownie with hay and nut accents. Light to medium bodied and slightly sweet. I tasted hints of molasses, caramel apple, grass, and lightly roasted nuts. It’s a Schwarzbier, chibuck (3513) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 28, 2011
On tap at the brewery into a mug...Pours a watery looking dark brown with TONS of amber highlights that is slightly darker than a coca cola. A very light tan head that is gone quickly...The aroma and taste are all a sweet German bock. Aroma is super matly with sweet brown sugar and caramel and the taste is the same, almost too sweet though and not enough bite to make you want to drink more. Easy to drink at 4% but not worth getting.

Draught during my Great Lakes region brew tour. Silky black pour with some red hues and a white head. Caramel and peat are in the nose. This has a very low hop profile. It’s light in the mouth and sweet, though slightly tart like sourdough. Pretty straightforward Schwarz. NobleSquirrel (3438) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 16, 2007
an okay dark beer. more of an american style, thought not a true schwarz in my mind. a bit hoppy and malty. Decent.
