Mug served at the brewpub bar with a dark brown appearance and light ruby tones showing through. The head was a modest, off white to light tan with fair cling to the lacing. Everything about this beer was light. In the aroma, there was very subtle German malt scent, roasted notes as mocha and hints of sweetness and caramel. The flavor was similar, adding some low bitterness to the somewhat thin body. Subtly dry was the finish. A no frills, sessionable, black lager. hombrepalo (1972) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 15, 2008
Pint mug @ piece, poured a murky dark brown with creamy head which lasted a while, probably a bad pour by the server. Aroma of roasted malts, barley and caramel. Carbonation is light almost too light. The rosted malts are the majority of the taste here, finishes smooth and refreshing with a caramel chocolate taste. An alright beer, pretty average overall, have had beer brews from piece. TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - JUN 30, 2010
Sampler on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a nice darker brown with dark amber! Lighter edges, opaque middle, decent light offwhite head with a ring on the edges. Aromas are mellow, light caramel and toffee mix in with light earthy hops, small with biscuits. Initial is biscuits, toffee, lighter bodied with nice sweetness, light hops. A pretty nice darker lager, quite drinkable with nice sweetness, light hops. Nice shigadeyo (3819) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - AUG 1, 2013

7/27/2010: Piece Dark Bier... Aroma: Milk chocolate with a splash of coffee. Appearance: Chesnut color; semi-opaque; no head. Flavor: Dark fruits (plum); gives way to chocolate and roasted and steeped grains; small herbal bitterness in the finish. Palate: Average. Overall: Finally, something a little interesting...
Draught (5% ABV) at Piece in Chicago. Rating #49 for this beer.
A clear copper ale with a thin moka head. In aroma, a nice caramel malt, light molasses note. In mouth, a rather light schwarzbier, with light sweet caramel, very thin. So-so. On tap at brewpub, May 18 2009.

Growler. Poured a clear dark brown color with dark orange highlights. The head was tan. Smelled of unsweetened chocolate brownie with hay and nut accents. Light to medium bodied and slightly sweet. I tasted hints of molasses, caramel apple, grass, and lightly roasted nuts. It’s a Schwarzbier, stoutchap (424) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 24, 2006
Like most schwarzbiers I’ve had I like it better than most lighter beers, but not nearly as much as a porter or stout. A little roasted malt in the nose. Some malts, chocolate, and molasses. Waxy mouthfeel. Very light palate. Ok, but not exciting. User29624 (1687) - - DEC 14, 2007
Did not really seem like a schwarzbier in my opinion. Poured dark brown with a thin head. Mild aroma, slightly sweet. Seemed very light, not one of Piece’s best beers. Thorpe429 (5122) - , Illinois, USA - APR 13, 2011
Reviewed from notes.
Pours near black with a very thin head and not too much lacing. Nose is roasted malt and not much else. Taste has a light roast character with a hint of sweetness but is mostly pretty dry. Feel is light with good carbonation. Easy sipper but nothing is really there.
