Finally got a chance to try this one at FoBAB 8. Of note, this is actually a strong porter made with smoked malt. Nose is smokey and nice. Earthy and chocolate, barbecue and some nice vanilla bourbon notes. The bourbon is very restrained, which is fantastic. It balances the beer out very well. Nice smokiness to the body that really ties it all together. Fantastic beer and one of my favorites from Piece! Walt (2449) - Austin, Texas, USA - APR 19, 2008
Pour is black with a nice dense brown head...smell is super bourbony...tons of wood, vanilla, and alcohol...amazing! taste is strongly roasty and chocolate at first with the wood, bourbon vanilla flavors coming out...lots of smoke too...wonderfully done!!!! thanks for finding me that extra glass Andy!!! pintsize (1041) - Austin, Texas, USA - JUN 4, 2008

Nice black pour with a huge great tan head. Great bourbon nice smell. Flavor is bourbon and malt and roasted nuts. No present alcohol. Great thick creamy dense palate with little to no carbonation. Stellar beer!!
Draft... DLD’08... This beer rocks!... Pours pitch black with a mid-sized, creamy, khaki-colored head. Fantastic retention. The aroma is of chocolate and sourmash with intoxicating vanilla pipe tobacco and coconut. Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and pillow-soft carbonation. Lots of acidic sourmash and mildly sweet chocolate. Very smooth and mellow with no alcohol burn. The wood has rid the Big Black Mariah of any “rough-around-the-edges” aspects. Chocolaty, bourbony, lightly tart, woodsy finish. World class beer! lb4lb (2629) - Austin, Texas, USA - MAY 1, 2008
Big thanks for the chance to try this beer! Pours black with a light, lasting tan head. Smell is lightly roasty and big bourbon with not much alcohol at all. Taste is rich, roasty bourbon and super smooth. Very drinkable and no heat from the alcohol getting in the way. Fantastic beer.

I might have been able to sneak my way into just a little taster of this tonight. I am so glad I was able to try it, because I was so disappointed I missed it earlier this year. Just from the little taster I got, it poured black with a tan head. Nice aroma. Very little carbonation, but the beer was very smooth. Nice bourbon flavor. This was really enjoyable I look forward to have similar beers from them in the future. Thanks Andy. Aurelius (5486) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - APR 12, 2008
Rich chocolate, bourbon and alcohol aroma. Balanced, though perhaps going a little towards underbittered at times. Very, very nice. Finishes off with a chocolate liqueur fade. railcat1 (702) - Kissimmee, Florida, USA - MAY 4, 2008
