tap at repeal prohibition festival at Schalfly. cloudy dark orange/copper with a rocky beige head. nose is very dark fruit layered with sweet alcohol. WOW, talk about a big barley here-huge caramel flavors with touches of dark fruit, resin and some green hops. Carbonation is sharp, which hinders the experience. There is quite a bit of complex things going on here, but doesnt really have much direction. THe flavors are very indifinitive. Long caramel and fruity finish. pretty decent. From the cask at Night of the Living Ales. Pours dark amber. Nose is of malts, a little citrus, and some dark fruits and raisin. The flavor has a some caramel, spices, fruit, and just a little hops to balance. I didn’t think it hide the alcohol as well as some other barleywines I have had. Still, another solid brew from Piece. On tap at the brewpub. Pours a deep brown, slightly ruby tinted body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is grapefruits and medium sweet caramels up front with some toffee backing, pines, earth, a good amount of mixed fruit, a light toast, and some brown sugar. Flavor is similar. Sweeter caramels and toffees up front with the mixed fruits and cherry. Some toast and grapefruit hops grow in the middle with earth and light pines. Finishes dry and moderately bitter with a mix of florals, fruit, earth, caramel, toffee, and some grain. Lengthy aftertaste following a smooth, full body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a solid barley wine. Nice caramel malt backing with a good amount of hops to balance and some mixed fruits. Easy drinking and pretty creamy with no hint of alcohol. Nice one. brentfeesh (1208) - Mansfield, Ohio, USA - FEB 22, 2007
Poured at the brewery in a tulip glass. Hazy amber, fairly dark, with a light head. Lightly sweet aroma with notes of sweet malt, chocolate and raison. The aroma was really more delicate than I anticipated. The flavor did not disappoint. An interesting combination of malt and vinous sweetness marked noticeably by alcohol. The finish is marked by chocolate, coco, and a bitterness that I would describe as pine like. The finish lingers around for a while too. There is also a light cherry flavor and perhaps some sherry hints. The mouth feel is full and semi-dry at the finish. A drinkable barley wine that I was glad to have tried. Amusing name too… drewbeerme (3920) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 22, 2007
UPDATED: FEB 27, 2008 on tap, pours cloudy amber/copper color. served way to cold but eventually warmed a nice piney PNW hop nose came forward with some caramel. flavor was an a nicely PNW hopped caramelly bw. very tasty and enjoyable. alcohol was very well hidden. very fun to drink......another sample of this and it’s clearly not worth the 4 I once gave it. A nicely hopped American BW but nothing special.3.8.

2/26/08, 2008 vintage on tap at piece. the appearance wasn’t great as it was pretty murky dark amber with off white head. this version is nicely hopped but is rather vegetal and that overwhelms everything. did they sit on this too long? still enjoyable but wow this isn’t very good at all. i drank behemoth before and after this and it blew it away for sure 3.5.
(draught at Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition Festival) Dark amber with very large head. Malt aroma. Flavor is warm malt and some hops with alcohol. hombrepalo (1971) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 1, 2008
on tap at the brew pub. Dark amber with small head, flat looking. Sweet and caramel nose. Thick taste of malt, hops, carmel, some alcohol, and somewhat syrupy. Overall nice barleywine. yummy! pantanap (3366) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 13, 2009
tap at piece and also had the cask version at DOLA. this rating is for the non-cask.... dark caramel brown pour with a thin soapy white head..... aroma of dark fruit, caramel, and sweet toffee notes.... flavors of dark dried fruit, caramel with a good malt backbone and a bitterness in the finish. some heat at the tailend as well. jkwood04 (5452) - Connecticut, USA - MAY 12, 2014
Sampled at the brewery. Pours deep amber with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel and toffee and nutty malts, and a light bitterness. Flavor the same with hints of alcohol. Smoother texture. A decent barley wine. MIBRomeo (2570) - Wisconsin, USA - AUG 10, 2008
Copper pour ligth tan head with decent lacing. Light cereals and grass in the aroma touch of fruit a piece of raw grains, lots of sweet notes, some hints of grahm cracker. Avg pal. Sweet graham cracker lightly bitter grass flavor fairly acidic, too much alcohol comes through. Not bad but I prefer the camel.
GTMW: Served by a very fun & cute brunette should be worth some bonus points.
