UPDATED: JUN 3, 2013 Bomber at Jerry’s. Black with big, creamy, brown head, good legs / Bright, fruity nose of cut pine, citrus, roast grain, coffee / Full body, chewy, touch of sweetness upfront but then dry with fine, bitter finish / Dry, dusty flavors of dark roast coffee, roast grain, unsweetened chocolate, tobacco, pine, orange, licorice, plum, prune / A great, big, dry stout.

Batch #10. Purchased at West Lakeview Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed on a very cool early fall night watching playoff hunt baseball. Appearance is a thick pitch black with a very rich tan head that laces to the glass. Aroma is a complex mixture of grassy hops, dark chocolate, nuts, lactose, rich coffee, but the hops really stand out moreso than any "black IPA’s" or hoppy imperial stouts I’ve had before. Taste is pretty phenomenal, it gives both punches that are found in a rich stout and a bitter hoppy IPA. The hops come out a bit more piney in the flavor and go down pretty bitter, with that rich chocolate/coffee flavor, I’m not sure of any other beer I’ve had that packs both sides of the punch equally hard. Great stuff, best brew I’ve had from this brewery hands down.

BOttle. Black as night and a nice thick tan head. Aroma is an awesome blend of chocolate, dark cocoa and an aggressive pine character. Plenty of both. It tastes much like it smells, tons of chocolate and roast, thick piney woody character that balances both the sweet and bitter, medium to full body, just delicious

Nice brown head. Pine & citric hop profile apparent in nose. Plenty of chocolate and roast as well. Taste is dank and rich. Mild saltiness--slight umami. Savory. Chewy. Heavy-bodied. Espresso and 70% cacao dark chocolate. Resinous, juicy hops on finish. Beautiful beer.

Batch #171: Pitch black coloured body with absolutely no light penetrating the beer at all and a thin, oily deep dark brown head - very nice looking, like an oyster stout almost and closes to an imperial ipa - not a black IPA. Aroma of biting piney and citrusey hops coupled with a ridiculously amount of deeply roasted malt, alcohol, anise and a bit of vanilla. Full-bodied; Strong roasty flavour with anise, oak, vanilla, cherries and bunches of bright hops all come together very nicely with one trying to overtake the others ever single second - but the roasted malt winning out most of the time. Aftertaste is super deep with a lot of complexity, but a big bitterness related to the malt and a little coffee note, all with a light sweetness and some pungent hops - still after a few minutes following a sip. Overall, a great black IPA, with tons of flavour, a great complexity and easily one of the best black IPAs or hoppy [lighter] imperial stouts i’ve ever had. If this was labelled three floyds, it would be even higher rated - but this is the real deal, a great beer that should be sampled if you can find it..and if you can find it, it’s best to buy a few bottles - I wish I would have, but i’ll try to find it again the next time in Chicago! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Binny’s in Chicago (South Loop), Illinois on 21-August-2013 for US$9.99 sampled at home in Washington in advance of running the 2013 USMC Marine Corps Marathon on 25-October-2013.

Deuce, batch #23. Pours a solid black with a tall dark brown head. Aroma is chocolate and boozey. Taste is bitter roasted coffee, dark chocolate, piney, earthy hops, lots of bitterness. Really well executed mix between a strong stout and some massive hops.

Bomber from trade with dfonorow. Thanks! Awesome appearance. Pours pitch black with a big foamy head that fades normally and leaves some oily webbing. Huge aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, tobacco, orange and pine. Taste is very roasty, chocolaty and hoppy all at once. Intense bitterness somehow balances with the deep roast and dark chocolate. Tobacco, citrus, and pine all show up in the long finish. Thick and oily mouthfeel with a slight chalkiness too. Overall, this is great stuff. I really love a good Black IPA and this is right up there with my favorites.

Nose was filled with smoke & bark. Hints of caramel and other sweet notes. Pours very dark brown. Thin but constant head. Sticks. Taste starts and ends very different. Initial taste is crisp and a bit sweet. Finish is caramel, malt, with earthy notes. Leaves your mouth heavy. Great beer overall.
