Canned 2/29/16 and drunk 4/15/16 at Torst.
Very large white head tops a deep copper-to-light-amber body. Definite chill haze but not cloudy or anything New Englandy. Retention is strong.
Tons of juicy fruit in the nose; cherry, watermelon, key lime. Its backed by a fair amount of caramel drenched biscuity malts that keep the intensity of the nose high. Pine works towards that end as well, with spicy, dank resin and moderate grapefruit. Some light alcohol.
At first, its full of juicy, lively, fairly soft fruit juice notes and you almost think Pipeworks has cracked the New England code. But very quickly these notes are outclassed by a rather heavy-handed assault of pine, white grapefruit, alcohol, caramel and bread. The attenuation and texture are done well and its not obnoxiously unbalanced or anything but it provides nothing unique or interesting. Reminds me very much of Dreadnaught. Odd that their Amarillo DIPA is much more easygoing and drinkable at 1.5% abv more. Pity about being 6 weeks old, which is definitely at the high end of the threshhold for what Id rate. But if Torst is happy to sell it.....
