On tap: The aroma consists of moderate oak, chocolate, and light cherry. It’s a dark brown with some orange highlights and a small beige head. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate. There is some light cherry in the background. The finish has moderate oak, pine, and faint vanilla. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation.
Sampled at FoBAB2012. Rating from notes. Pours black with a frothy brown head. Aroma is roasty, with bourbon and cherry notes. Some chocolate malt giving this a nice chocolate covered cherry thing going on. Flavor is sweet and boozy with mild bitterness from the roast, as well as a nice tartness imparted by the cherries. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Safe to say, there’s lots going on with this beer. But, it seems to mesh for the most part. Sampled at FOBAB ’12. Brown black with a beige head. Earthy wood mossy aroma with cherries and bright fruit. Rich malts. Tart cherries with dry bourbon. Bitter roast in the finish. FOBAB, pours brown with creamy tan head. some cocoa and oak on the nose, just a faint hint to cherry. flavors are balanced and somewhat muted but pleasant, fruity cherry hints with cocoa nibs, raisins, brown sugar, and minimal toasted oak. this works. FOBAB ’12. Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense, creamy and frothy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is just like the original with lots of piney, American hops and a strong roast backing, but there’s a bit of a woody bourbon note with a touch of cherry. Nice chocolate maltiness comes out more as this warms with some citruses, florals, and resins from the hops. A few vanilla notes in there too. Flavor is similar. The original base is distinct with the rich chocolates, heavy roasts, and piney citrus hops coming through alongside a nice cherry essence. Touches of bourbon and a nice woody element towards the end with a bit of a tartness from the cherries as this finishes moderately bitter and clean with a balanced sweetness. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a really solid beer. I liked the original just a tad better, but I enjoyed the wood element and the slightly diminished bitterness. The light cherry is also nice, but I’d love to see a bit more. Sampled at FoBAB 2012. Pours black with a medium sized fluffy tan head. The aroma is roasted malts, black cherry, dark chocolate and wood. The flavor had roasted malt, oak, well integrated black cherry with perhaps a hint of tart character, a subtle coffee note to the finish. Smooth, soft carbonation, pretty tasty.

Draft at FoBAB. Pours black with a brown head, hint of red to it. Nose is cocoa and chocolate, some coconut and vanilla, along with a hit of cherry pie. Soft and underlying overall. Clean. On tasting, medium-full bodied with a light astringency. Shows cocoa, char & a mild sweetness. The cherry adds a pie like element with some mild tart notes. Again clean and nice. Pours basically black with a big head.
The aroma is earthy and roasty, big but not overbearing, fruity in kind of a mild almost soft way, but certainly boozy.
The flavor is roasty and sweet, the cherry character is more along the lines of dark sweet cherries as opposed to tart cherries, either fits an Imperial Stout well and I think in this particular beer the use of the dark sweet cherry flavor is really nice, big and flavorful as the beer is the cherries provide a mild sweetness that otherwise is someone absent. The oakiness gives the beer a mild vanilla and the roastiness makes one think of charred oak... a sort of faux bourbon affect if you wil...
Pretty darned good for my first "ratable" sample from Pipeworks.
Sampled at FoBAB 10 - 2012 (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich deep pour, opaque and dark, rich and dark, frothy head. Aromas are roasty and cherry, a bit tart. Cocoa, roast, toffee, and mellow oak tannin. Initial is richer cherry, a bit tart, tannic, oak and roasty, cocoa and vanilla. Some rich roasty malts, some toffee, vanilla, and caramel, toffee. Richer cherry. Middle is tart, tannic, and dry, complimented by roast, toast. Backend and finish shows dryness, cherry, gentle red fruit. Richer dry hop, oak tannins, toffee, dry richer elements. Fairly well put together. Touches of cherryskin, oak. Gentle spice. Nice beer, much better than regular Abduction in my opinion. The oak gives some complexity, the cherry some tartness and fruit elements, and that odd Anise/Cough Syrup feel I get from the original is not there which is why I like it much better. FoBAB 2012, 1st beer of the day: Basically opaque with a fading tan head. The aroma has notes of roast, dark bread, chocolate, oak, char, herbal and earthy esters with a minimal cherry vapour. The taste is initially heavy sweet malts with a oaky tannic overtone. Plenty of roast and coffee as well. Again very minimal on the cherry influence. The mouth feel is smooth and slightly oily, could have used a tad more carbonation. Sampled from the tap at FOBAB 2012. Pours black with a brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has notes of musty roasted malts with dark chocolate with oak coming through in the finish. Flavor starts with a bit of sweet cherry but is quickly taken over by dark chocolate and roasted malts.
