Rye Barleywine Style Ale. The unicorn may have finally found its match in Death Incarnate. But hold your horned horses, because the unicorn lives to rye another day! What a sickle joke! But, we aren’t tricking you, this barley wine is a real treat, with a rich malt skeleton and a more than paranormal amount of hops. If you’re going to harvest soul-y one beer this season, don’t fear the reaper...

2015 bottle shared. Thanks Justin! Pours a deep, clear copper with a finger of soapy head that lingers. Big malty nose with molasses, brown sugar, sorghum and light maple notes. Clean and malt-forward on the palate. Very drinkable for the abv and flavors, sweet but not overly so. Light bitterness on the finish with a touch of herbal peppermint. This is nice.

From notes. Enjoyed at a tasting at Steebo’s on February 11. 22 oz bottle. The pour is a darker amber colored brown with a thicker khaki head that falls slowly to a dense cap with a decent lace left behind. The aroma is really interesting. There is a spicy rye right up front with a hefty dark fruit lingering in the background. Had this one gone to dark malts, it would’ve been good, but it goes to a very bright hop. I really dislike American barley wines, and this is definitely that. The rye cuts it a little, but it’s nowhere near enough. The flavor is a little more bitter. The dark fruits and spicy rye oak try to cut them, but the hops just dominate. There is a light leafiness about it that I don’t care for at all. The mouth feel is decently thick with a brighter carbonation and a lingeringly bitter hop and dark fruit finish. The bitterness just turns me off of this so badly.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 9/23/2016. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red/light copper color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, papaya, passion fruit, raisin, berries, plum, cherry, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted bread, spicy rye, light nuttiness/pine, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops, dark/bready malt, and light fruity yeast notes; with great strength. A bit of booze appears as it warms. Taste of huge grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, papaya, passion fruit, raisin, berries, plum, cherry, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted bread, spicy rye, light nuttiness/pine, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine/herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, papaya, passion fruit, raisin, berries, plum, cherry, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted bread, spicy rye, pine, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical hops, dark/bready malt, and light fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/grainy, fairly sticky, and lightly slick/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is very well hidden; a light warmth lingering after the finish, with minimal booziness. Overall this is an outstanding American barleywine! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical hops, dark/bready malt, and light fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the big ABV. Insane amounts of juicy hops and balancing malt sweetness; not overly bitter or drying like many in the style tend to be. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottled. Pours cloudy deep amber with nearly no head. Aroma of toasted caramel, toffee, rye, citrus, orange zest and pine. Sweet flavor that ends up being more dry and bitter. A very nice hoppy Barley. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Murky brown with an average beige head and decent lacing. Aroma of rye, toasted malts, pine, and mild baking spices. Taste is malty and sweet up front with pine, mild citrus, and lots of rye. Toffee in the finish. Thicker and sweeter with a little dryness.

Cojonudo BW!

Dark chestnut and cherry hue that is beautiful finished by a tight & thin white head. Caramel and honey sweetness on the beginning that has a subtle spicey rye and roasted note. Good little heat flash at the end to remind you this is a big one. This is a fantastic barleywine plus I am a sucker for marketing as I love the Nina, unicorn vs. whatever theme.

On tap at twin anchors. Dark brown with some red. Pretty good head. Lots of sugar in the front with honey. Hop on the back. This is excellent. No heat at all. I would never guess this is double digit abv. Outstanding.
