3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
I’m a little conflicted about this one, because of its unusual appearance and palate, but man is it a very tasty barleywine!
So the issue is this is truly way out there on the barleywine end of the spectrum. . . to the point that it’s nearly flat, in terms of carbonation. Traditional, but I prefer a little more bubble (outside the cask).
Nose is unremarkable, but the color gives you a hint something is unusual here, as it’s not just the usual carmely hue, but a bit of a blazing (bloody?) red to it.
But man that flavor. So cool to get the unicorn hop vibe, along with all of its raging bitter profile, wrapped around a syrupy, roasty barleywine.
Tastey tastey stuff. . . might make you wince a bit when you first taste, but as the flavors play out of the next couple minutes, going all the way from blazing lemony bitters to rich sweet leathery carmel. . . sigh. . .
Rich brown coloured body with a deep, caramel and ruby tint, very nice, all with a large, four centimetre tall tan head that fades slowly. Aroma of alcohol, toffee, earth, pit fruits, caramel, bright grassy hops, raisins and a good dose of specialty grains - very nice and incredibly aromatic. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong dense and rich flavours of malt, toffee, alcohol, grain, cognac, dry oak, vanilla and some dense peat. Very full flavoured with some good alcohol warmth while showing a lot of sweetness from toffee, caramel and some pitted fruits, all with a definite bitterness, a little dryness and a lot of complexity near the finish with the yeast and pit fruits the strongest flavours. Overall, a nice barley wine and I think the time spent in the bottle was well worth it, I almost wish I aged this 2+ years, but one was nice. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in New York (Columbus Circle), New York on 19-December-2015 for US$10,99 sampled at home in Washington on 17-February-2017.

Bottled. Pours deep amber with a small beige head. Aroma of toffee, toasted caramel, ripe orange and berries and also pine. Sweet flavor that ends up being more dry and pleasant bitter. Medium bodied, oily to syrupy texture and soft to average carbonation. An excellent hoppy Barley. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Benzai (15930) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - NOV 2, 2016

Bottle pour at Kevin’s. Big malty brown sugar caramel hoppy barley wine. Nice overall. Ughsmash (7508) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 4, 2016
Bomber. Poured clear coppery amber with a sticky white head. The aroma picked up aged caramel and lesser dark fruits with light accents of resiny aged pine.. seemed a bit old. The flavor found similar, with good oxidation accents.. tasty and malty. Medium-bodied with low-moderate carbonation.. OK feel and flow.. past it’s prime, but still good. 22 oz bottle. Pours hazy copper brown with a medium creamy light tan head that retains well and leaves a little lacing.Thechasm442 (1005) - Denver, Colorado, USA - JAN 16, 2016
The aroma is sweet caramel malts with fruity resiny hops and some alcohol and nuttiness.
The flavor is sweet caramel malts with fruity resiny hops and some sharp alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, nice balance of malt and fruity resiny hops. A bit sharp on the alcohol.
Bomber poured in a tulip. The pour is a cloudy burnt reddish brown with a average off white head that shrinks to cover the top and leaves decent lacing. Aroma is citrus, caramel, toffee, and pine. Flavor is lots of pine up front and throughout. Caramel, toffee, grapefruit, and other citrus is there as well. Mouthfeel is thicker and the beer is somewhat hot, but not too bad. Really good.
