This strong amber beer was first brewed in 1982 at the request of Van Steenberges Italian importer. Piraat is a wickedly rich and rounded brew that packs a mighty punch. The powerful glow builds up from inside. Deep golden with a subtle haze. Lots of hops and malt. Mild sweetness. Reminiscent of bread dough, spices and tropical fruits.

UPDATED: FEB 8, 2007 Came in thinking over-hyped Belgian brew. Wrong. Malty, yeasty sweet, hoppy --- pure joy. Sorry, no banana/bubblegum adjectives, just know If youve never tried, do.

UPDATED: JUN 12, 2015 Bottled. Big frothy eggshell head on a lively golden pour. Sweet, alcoholic aroma with hints of tropical fruit and yeast. Malty with a little veggie. As for taste, extremely strong alcohol. Sweet malt with some spice. Full body. Not really warming, more like burning, and a little slickness. Reminds me of spiced rum, probably a good digestif. [2006.04.27: 2.9]

330mL bottle back in the States. Sweet nose of golden malt with faint tropical character, some nice phenolic / Belgian yeast development, and very mildly dank/stuffy. Pours deep orange almost into brown (much darker than I remembered) with strong, aggressive carbonation and a large soapy beige head. Taste extremely sweet, borderline cloying, has some ice pop fruitiness with alcohol slickness and a sharp, immediate, lasting burn from the booze; and yet theres good complexity in and development of the higher alcohols. Dragging bubblegum all across the floor, a touch of honey under banana with faint mint, subtle pepper; again, very strong phenolic development in the fullish body. Theres a lot to like here, really, and the alcohol isnt quite as brash as might be inferred, yet the sugary-sweetness is a damning millstone. [2015.06.12: 2.9]

UPDATED: APR 17, 2011 33cl bottle. Deep gold, very thick white head. Very carbonated. Yeasty banana and peach aroma. Lots of alcohol. Syrupy. Just too much alcohol. Sorry, I dont like this much 2.1/5.0 Re-rate bottle from Lidl. Clear orange brown colour with lasting thick head. Some banana esters on the aroma. Touch of light toffee on aroma. Yep its still too syrupy strong obvious alcohol. But slightly better than I first rated this. There isnt enough of anything else to support the alcohol so its just too obvious and stands ojt too much

1/3 l bottle. Light amber color with creamy head. I poured carefully but still got floating chunks to my glass. Fortunately they dont seem to affect flavor. Tart fruity aroma with orange and alcohol notes. Complex chocolatey alcohol aroma, not at all unpleasant. Sweet malty and fruity flavor with orange, mango and melon. Herbal hops on the background. Quite full-bodied but not too heavy. Sweet, herbal, orangey and slightly bitter finish. Delicious and balanced.

From a 750ml. caged cork brown bottle with a cool painted/screened Pirate with a Viking ship in the background label. Made a good appearance, poured a hazy amber golden with a large foamy white head that settled into a thin, bubbly lacing, good carbonation. Had a sweet pale malty and peppery, grassy nose with a funky, dry Belgian yeastiness and whiffs of spicy alcohol. A crisp, textured on the tongue, smooth, but alcoholic, lightish from the carbonation, medium bodied mouth feel, good Belgian strong ale drinkability. Smooth tropical fruity and honey maltiness with a peppery, grassy hop taste, a balanced bitterness between hops and malts, a subtle funky, earthy yeastiness, a spicy alcohol warmth in the palate and a dry, crisp fruity and grassy, alcoholic finish. a dangerously quaffable Belgian ale. One of the better Belgian strong ales with many IPA-like qualities, very recommended, a must try for anyone exploring Belgian ales.

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2013 I have had this beer several times over the years. Somehow I keep forgetting how much I enjoy this brew, yet on those occasions when I happen upon it again - I am reminded. Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this brew pours a hazy pale golden color with a huge white head that leaves lots of lacing. The aroma is sweet, tangy and yeasty with a hint of spice. The flavor is sweet and sugary with a strong yeasty element and a hint of citrus and pepper on the finish. Very nice.

Beer pours a hazy light golden color with plenty of protein chunks doing laps. Huge frothy, off-white, mostly lasting, quickly diminishing head. The aroma is quite nice: malty with moderate notes of toasted grain, cookie and caramel; hoppy with moderate notes of chamomile and herb; yeasty with moderate notes of cellar, light note of barnyard; miscellaneous components include moderate notes of winter-like spice, refined sugar/candy, citrus zest. The flavor is heavily sweet, lightly bitter with a long, moderately sweet, lightly bitter finish. Overall, its damn sweetbut I think this kind of dessert-in-a-glass beer has its place. Despite a light warmth in the finish, theres no real betrayal of ABV in this sample. The body is medium-to-full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is lively.

Hazy gold. Well built, fizzy, white head. A few yeast floaters suspended in the murkiness. Nose of pungent, past ripe fruit, doughy yeast, rich malt, candi sugar, and a bit of straw. Same flavors, plum, clove, and cotton candy, also. Dry, alcoholic, browned fruity yeast finish. Full, balanced body. Decent lacing. AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRgh!
