This strong amber beer was first brewed in 1982 at the request of Van Steenberge’s Italian importer. Piraat is a wickedly rich and rounded brew that packs a mighty punch. The powerful glow builds up from inside. Deep golden with a subtle haze. Lots of hops and malt. Mild sweetness. Reminiscent of bread dough, spices and tropical fruits.

Bottle, 0.33l. Cloudy golden pour with one finger white head, thick and persistent. Nose mildly floral, herbal. Touch of wheat. Thin to medium body, softly carbonated. Regular texture, a bit watery. Malty sweet with a bit of alcohol burn on the tongue. Slightly sticky mouthfeel. Aroma pretty much as expected. Belgian yeast, wheat. Herbal, grassy, slightly peppery. Subtle caramel and toffee. Noticeable alcohol presence. Finishes sweet a d a bit boozy with lingering alcohol burn. Overall, pretty good. Nothing out of ordinary, but nicely balanced and tasty.

Rich, malty aroma. Grassy hops, lemon juice, also some floral hops. Sweet and warm taste, rich pale malts and dried fruits, caramel. Pleasant , bitter and sweet aftertaste. Nice.

On tap. Somehow harsher on the tongue than I expected.... Or usually experience. There is a worrisome bitterness that is....unpleasant. Compared to somewhat similar Belgian beers (I know, Jack Kerouac is cringing somewhere... "All comparisons are loathsome" or something to that effect) this misses the mark a bit. Still, it has it’s points and is not a disaster. Let’s just say I have had better. Cloudy, amber, nice foam and lacing. The aftertaste is also...unusual.

Bottle. Big head upon pouring. Sweetness dominates with a strong mouth feel. Strong presence of alcohol as you would expect. Perhaps an acquired taste but I enjoyed drinking it. Not one for lunchtimes though.

330ml bottle pours dark orange with thin off-white head. Aromas of stone fruit, yeast and candy sugar. Flavours of orange rind, sugar syrup, bready yeast, toffee, subtle spices and alcohol. Very well balanced Belgian Strong Ale with classic flavour profile.

drpimento (3638) - La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - APR 16, 2017
One of the great beers. Aroma’s good with wet grain,, yeast, malt. Flavor’s super, somewhat like aroma, sweet up front tang in the middle and a little bit bitter in the finish. Add some spice and you have it.
