This strong amber beer was first brewed in 1982 at the request of Van Steenberges Italian importer. Piraat is a wickedly rich and rounded brew that packs a mighty punch. The powerful glow builds up from inside. Deep golden with a subtle haze. Lots of hops and malt. Mild sweetness. Reminiscent of bread dough, spices and tropical fruits.

Aromas of elderberries, cherries, grapes, tropical fruits, and wild flowers, along with hints of vanilla and caramel. Hazy deep orange-amber with rocky, white head foam that has great retention. Sweet with a bite of fruity tartness, spice, and hop bitterness, and perceptible strength without being boozy. Medium-full bodied, with a refreshing, frothy carbonation, and a drying, tart, spicy and fruity finish.

On tap. Somehow harsher on the tongue than I expected.... Or usually experience. There is a worrisome bitterness that is....unpleasant. Compared to somewhat similar Belgian beers (I know, Jack Kerouac is cringing somewhere... "All comparisons are loathsome" or something to that effect) this misses the mark a bit. Still, it has its points and is not a disaster. Lets just say I have had better. Cloudy, amber, nice foam and lacing. The aftertaste is also...unusual.

Bottle. Big head upon pouring. Sweetness dominates with a strong mouth feel. Strong presence of alcohol as you would expect. Perhaps an acquired taste but I enjoyed drinking it. Not one for lunchtimes though.

330ml bottle pours dark orange with thin off-white head. Aromas of stone fruit, yeast and candy sugar. Flavours of orange rind, sugar syrup, bready yeast, toffee, subtle spices and alcohol. Very well balanced Belgian Strong Ale with classic flavour profile.

One of the great beers. Aromas good with wet grain,, yeast, malt. Flavors super, somewhat like aroma, sweet up front tang in the middle and a little bit bitter in the finish. Add some spice and you have it.

Goudgeel, licht amber, witte schuimkraag, iets koolzuur, helder.

Bottle @ my sisters. Dark golden (or light amber) color. Frothy off white head. Aromas of alcohol, malt, sweet fruit. Retronasal its alcoholic, malty. Flavor is moderate sweet, fruity. Rather strong alcohol feel. Medium bodied. Light bitter finish. Too alcoholic and not very subtle. There was a time that I probably liked this, but that time has long gone.
