This Belgian Noël takes it’s name from Jan Baptista van Helmont (1579-1644), the Flemish chemist and physician who first discovered CO and coined the word “gas” by recognizing the existence of gases distinct from air. This energy luminary was the founder of pneumatic chemistry and also the first to bridge alchemy and early chemistry. Hats off to the man behind the bubble. Proost and Happy Holidays!

2008 unmarked bomber shared thanks to mrubio. Melanoidin-rich aroma, creamy palate and nearly syrupy sweet, some spice (and no hop or alcohol notes).

My sample fizzed from here to the Pole of Inaccessibility, so have a big and thirsty towel handy when you crack a bomber. Pours a barely translucent apricot with a rather thick, if effervescent, pale buff head. Aroma has firm fruity and yeasty notes with hints of malt and butterscotch. Fruity flavor has notes of banana, pear and mango; and has yeasty and malty underpinnings plus a snippet of butterscotch. Texture is fairly thick, and strong fizz makes you feel it all the way down the pipes. This one is a real gasser!

GTAEgeek (2495) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - MAY 19, 2014
Sample in a flight at the brewery. Pours a light gold, with a minimal head. The aroma is bready and fruity, with notes of apples, bananas, cloves, and biscuit dough. Very sweet flavor, with little to no bitterness or sourness. Medium to heavy body, creamy, and smooth. Overall, this is a cloyingly sweet, but generally tasty beer. Could be more complex, but certainly not bad.

BadAprilia1000 (435) - Sevierville, Tennessee, USA - MAY 7, 2014
Pours a hazy yellow with a fantastic head. Smells of yeast, honey, herbs, spices, vegetables, alcohol, grass, hay. Bouquet is bigger than what I described. Tastes slightly metallic and also tastes of honey, caramel, dark fruits, grape, candy sugar, grass, warming herbs, sweet spice.

jtclockwork (17604) - , New Jersey, USA - MAY 3, 2014
Bottle. Pours reddish amber with off white head. Nose/taste of honey, dark candy sugar, raisin, sweet breads, dark fruit, caramelized brown sugar and toffee. Medium body. Too sweet.

Lubiere (14240) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 24, 2013
A golden ale with a thin white ale. In aroma, sweet candy sugar with apple juice, honey, light oxidation. In mouth, sweet honey with light aniseed, signs of oxidation.

750 mL bottle from Bruisin’ Ales, Asheville, NC. Dark orange pour with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of orange peel, cherry, and faint caramel. The flavor is sweet Belgian candi sugar upfront with a fruity, citrusy finish. A bit of bugglegum as well. Moderate alcohol warming. Good beer.

blklab2007 (2120) - Connecticut, USA - AUG 6, 2013
Bottle as an extra. Pour has an orange golden color with a slight cap of white foam and a fairly still look in the glass. Aroma has some sourness, pear sweetness, white grape, and honey. Flavor definately has some sour, honey, white grapes, sweet over ripe fruit, and odd yeast. I drank the whole first glass thinking one sip I like it and the next that I dont. I am confused it is sour and sweet, while being fruity and Belgian. The only plus side is that you can not tell there is any alcohol in this even though it is so high in the abv department. The barcode is cut off this bottle so I will assume it was on a clearance rack somewhere as it is definately super aged. I am going to guess that this one got a little abused and who knew she would like it.

rudolf (2360) - Buffalo, New York, USA - JUN 30, 2013
Clear ruby, no head. Nose is caramel, berries, sweet sweet honey, strangely some polenta. Flavor is cherries, honey, alcohol, toffee. Really nice, really sweet.
