Bierdimpfe (640) - Quebec, CANADA - MAR 22, 2017
1 year old bottle : Lightly veiled copper color with almost no activity. Creamy and frothy beige/orange 3-4 finger island head, lasting around 10-15 minutes, with good lacing and a nice swirl construct. Flavors of dark roasted grains, ginger, nutmeg, dark berries, plums, molasses, cheese, oak, lemon, caramel, herbal spices. Highly sweet, deeply malty and fruity, while heavily bitter. Soft creamy and slick medium body with prickly and crispy carbonation. Strong finish, thick sugary roasted malts and fruity esters, leafy hops, soft barrel aged feel, with lots of red ale spices. A little overly spicy and coarse, not very accessible. Lacks the true deep fruity feel of a barley wine, more like a cross with an red ale gingerbread feel. Yet it’s still quite tasty and nicely aged, with respectful freshness for the ABV. The flavors are balanced and well executed. Overall very good quality craft.

Aroma is caramel, honey, toffee, back licorice and rich malts. Taste is rich sweet malts, caramel, some dark fruits, and citrus. Some tart, earthiness and clove on the tip. A good balance of deep rich malts and earthy hops .

Bottle (660 ml), split 3-ways. Hazy orangey-amber with a medium beige head, easy to revive, leaving good lacing. Aroma is of caramel, smoked ham, resinous hops, earthy/mineral notes, moderate spiciness and mild red fruits presence. Taste is caramelish-sweet with a strong malt backbone, smoked ham, resinous presence aplenty, earthy/mineral notes, moderate alcohol, moderate spiciness, mild fruity notes and medium bitterness. Medium to full body. Oily mouthfeel. Resinous and smoked ham finish. What’s good is that alcohol is not over the top and there’s a good malt backbone. What I don’t like is the smoked ham mixed with resinous hops and fruits, it makes it very hard to drink even for a "low" abv Barley Wine.

Bomber, merci Pierre T. Orange, col blanc-cassé.
