nephirem (583) - CROATIA - MAR 17, 2016
Pours dark ruby, almost black colour with medium, creamy beige head. Smell of roasted malts, yeast. Subtle chocolate presence. Medium body with average carbonation. Smooth texture. Taste is nicely balanced, slightly bitter. Aroma of roasted malts and yeast with toffee and caramel present in the aftertaste. Finish is short and mostly dry. Overall, pretty good and refreshing. I’m definitely picking this one up again.

0.5l bottle from Kaufland in Pula. Starts with thick silky beige head, looks good, moderately persistent, lacing stays all way long. Aroma is moderate cocoa and a bit of roasted malt and butter. Taste is slightly on the malty side, some caramel. some cocoa. Moderate bitterness, mixture of fresh hops and roasted malt. Mild bitter aftertaste. Moderate palate, silky, charming mouthfeel. Lacks the complex harmony of the better Czech Dunkels, but a fairly well composed dark beer.

31/08/2010 - 30cl from tap @ Medvedgrad Adzijina

Clear dark red to brown beer (not exactly black). Tick beige rocky head. Aroma is malty, sweet, dried fruits, caramel. MF is a little flat, medium body and somewhat watery texture. Taste is sweet, roasted malts, some red berries. Aftertaste has a little coffee bitterness, caramel and some acidity to keep the beer balanced. Good brew.

Thanks to Marko, I managed to sample the new, bottled version of this beer. Even though Gricka Vjestica is still my beer to go at Medvedgrad, I’m no stranger to this one. Pours dark brown, with aroma of roasted malts and moderate foam. Soft to moderate carbonization. Sweetness and bitterness complement each other well after giving way to coffee/caramel. That said, not a complex beer.

50cl on tap. Pours dark brown with weak brownish head. Aroma of caramel and coffee. Taste is a bit sweet and predominantly caramel. Average sweetish aftertaste. Very drinkable, but it could be more complex.

Bottle shared at King Hall. Opaque black pour with thin off-white foam. Aroma is toasty, roasted grain, light coffee, very mild chocolate notes. Taste is roasty, lightly caramelized, malt forward. Palate is light bodied, good carbonation, easy drinking. Good!

Draught at Pivnica Medvedgrad, Zagreb. Notes from July 08. Pours dark brown with brown head. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Flavour is of malt, chocolate and caramel. Good mouthfeel with a dry and bitter finish.

Draft at the Božidara Adžije location. Darkest brown lager, foamy over-the-top head. Soapy foam nose. Coating, rusty roast. Strong flavor, a touch metallic but otherwise very tasty. Striking roast, but same eggy, sour lactic nose that turned me off their other strong beer. Quite nice overall.
