Grodziskie or Grätzer is a Sour Smoked Wheat Ale that was brewed in the 1900s in East Prussia and dates back to as early as the 15th century. It was named after the Polish town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski or Grätz in German. Our historic version is brewed according to the German Purity Law with air-dried barley malt and beech smoked wheat malt and hopped with Perle and Saaz. A sour mash is created using the old and forgotten technique called “Digerieren.” Finally a three month aging and maturation process creates a complex sour, smoky and heavily hopped wheat ale.

Bottled @ RBESG 2013 Grand Tasting. Cloudy golden color, medium head. Aroma has smoke, wheat, banana. Bit sweet, slight dry. I really like this combination of beechwood smoke and sweet banana. Nice stuff.

RBESG 2013. Bottle during Grand Tasting at De Molen. Hazy golden beer with a small white head. Fruity bready aroma, salty, grapes, hay, some biscuits. Grainy floral flavor, hay, fruity, sourish, some caramel.

Bottle @ RBESG grand tasting. Hazy yellow color, small white head. Smell wheat, sweetness and a bit fruity. Taste wheat, a bit sweetish again and fruity. Soft carbonation and a bit low bodied. Way better than other beers from this style I’ve had up till now.

2013-02-02. Hazy dark yellow amber body with a small white head. 3+ Smokey aroma, pale malt and a not quite weisse like yeast character. Flavour is mild, lightly smokey, pale malt, light yeast. 6+ Average to light bodied palate. Okay but not to my tastes. Bottle at Sourfest, Buffalo

[5093-20130202] Bottle. Banana nut muffin aroma has a little smoked base. Hazy, light brown body with a medium-lasting foamy white head. Smoked straw and old grains flavour. Light-medium body. Meh, not my kind of style. (5/3/6-/3/10) 2.7

No bottling information.
Appearance: The body is crystal clear with an amber hue, the head is tall and dense with excellent retention.
Aroma: The aroma is mildly smokey, some spice and hints of sour, combined it reminds me a bit of menthol or Vicks Vaporub.
Taste: The intro is mildly sweet of watermelon, odd. The beer gets a bit bland after with the fruitiness fading with only hints of smoke and no sour.
Palate: Medium bodied with light carbonation.
Overall This is very mildly smoked with no sour. Not much going on other than fruit flavors.

Draft. Golden pour with white head. Different sour tart aroma with some spice. Flavor is light and smoked and tart with a touch if wheat, grows on you.

Bottle from 16 Tons Taphouse, Eugene. Pours a cloudy dark orange, slight head. Aroma is syrupy sweet, smoke is slight, some wheat and yeast as well. Body big but billowy, disappearing quickly. Finish tart, and lots of wheat, but smoke doesn’t return, disappointingly. Interesting, yes, but not generally my cup of tea.
