COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Grodziskie or Grätzer is a Sour Smoked Wheat Ale that was brewed in the 1900s in East Prussia and dates back to as early as the 15th century. It was named after the Polish town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski or Grätz in German. Our historic version is brewed according to the German Purity Law with air-dried barley malt and beech smoked wheat malt and hopped with Perle and Saaz. A sour mash is created using the old and forgotten technique called “Digerieren.” Finally a three month aging and maturation process creates a complex sour, smoky and heavily hopped wheat ale.

Bottle from 16 Tons Taphouse, Eugene. Pours a cloudy dark orange, slight head. Aroma is syrupy sweet, smoke is slight, some wheat and yeast as well. Body big but billowy, disappearing quickly. Finish tart, and lots of wheat, but smoke doesn’t return, disappointingly. Interesting, yes, but not generally my cup of tea.

On tap at Milltown - thanks, Ethan! Nice pale gold pour, zesty and well carbonated. I’ve not had too many in this style before but love the idea. Hops came across as more understated to me than anticipated, but they were certainly detectable in the nose (blended nicely with the tart wheat and modest smoke) and more so in the taste. Prickly mouthfeel, again a nice blending of flavors, smoky Berliner vibe, with acidity bringing together both hops and wheat, smoke cutting through unostentatiously.

From a bottle shared at home. Pours a cloudy gold with a thick white head. Interesting combination of light sour and smoke. Almost Sake like.

Finally found this damn thing in RB. Bottle from Spirits Lacey a few months ago. Pours out a well carbonated golden color with a small white head.aroma is of light earthy smoke, almost burnt leaves, light spices, and so e acidic tartness. Taste is odd, watery body with some tartness, wet smoked wood, light tartness, some grass, light spice. Strange, but st the same time I dig it.

NYC Trip Beer #14. First beer at Tørst. Yes, I went to Wikipedia to be able to cut and paste that Scandinavian letter. Pours the color or an overripe pear. The nutty smell reminds me of the scent near the basement bar at my grandmother’s house. Odd, I know. Has a wonderful dry flavor with an effervescent mouthfeel. Draft - Tørst - New York, NY

Half liter bottle from Beer Run. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized fizzy off-white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of wheat, caramel, faint smoke.. The taste is smoke, pale wheat malts, stone fruits, more smoke in the finish along with some raisin and herbal hops. Lightly tart. Medium bodied. Decent.

500 ml bottle. Pours a hazy straw color with a fizzy white head of foam. Aroma is lactic tartness with a leafy, wheaty characteristic. Taste is not nearly as tart as the aroma indicated. Spritzy on the tongue. An alright beer, bit not something I would want again.
