Grodziskie or Grätzer is a Sour Smoked Wheat Ale that was brewed in the 1900s in East Prussia and dates back to as early as the 15th century. It was named after the Polish town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski or Grätz in German. Our historic version is brewed according to the German Purity Law with air-dried barley malt and beech smoked wheat malt and hopped with Perle and Saaz. A sour mash is created using the old and forgotten technique called “Digerieren.” Finally a three month aging and maturation process creates a complex sour, smoky and heavily hopped wheat ale.

Bottle sample at a sour tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks DSG. Cloudy golden with white ring, smoke, roasted potatoes aroma, sweet and a little medicinal taste, also young wood. Light body, smooth texture.

Bottle @ RBESG. Aroma has loads of spices and quite some smoke. Flavour is big smoke, some caramel and loads of spice. Interesting but not my thing.

Refrigerated 0.5 L brown bottle poured into a english pint glass. Pours hazy deep golden with one finger white head. Aroma is slight smoke, medium body, low carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is tart and some light smoke. Interesting, but not something I would go out of my way to have again.

Clear straw pour with small white head. Smokey citrus and wheaty nose. Unique smokey, slightly sour taste. light body and wheaty texture. Slightly sweet finish. Wish I had chilled it more

Bottle( kindly delivered by jfb!): Deep golden, cloudy , slowly collapsing loose white head with a little lace, sweetish wheaty-fruity (apricots) nose with very faint traces of smoked malt; dryish sourish-sweetish flavour, light bodied; lingering hoppy and sourish finish. Not too special, tastes a bit like an average German Hefeweizen…

Pale, slightly hazy warm golden colour, white head. Aroma of banana, smoke, wheat and wood. Smoky flavour, ash, malts and wheat. Lots of carbo. Finish ash and wheat.
(From 50cL bottle @ RBESG 2013 Grand Tasting, De Molen. Thanks for sharing, jfb!)

Rather hazy yellow with nice white head that fades to 1-2mm. Aroma of tart grain, cedar, hint of banana and smoke. Medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Flavor is dry grain with bark bitterness. Zingy grain sweetness. Not overly sour or smokey. Ok.
