January 6th, 2012 - A brew honoring a departing Pizza Port brewmaster? I love the idea, though I didn’t find out the backstory for this particular beer until a couple of years later, here, writing the review. But it seems that Jeff Bagby was well loved, and I can see why. This is a classy way to leave a job. He must have been a classy brewer in all things, too. He’s also seems to have a flair for the dramatic, as this brew both begins and ends with a bang. The aroma is alcohol - straight alcohol with a woody, bourbon burn. I staunch my nose and face and go for a sip (feeling a little singed by the power alcohol content) where I get a good and sweet medicinal and floral taste. Bourbon and whiskey overfloweth in the taste, too, with deep, dark cherries providing a sugary contour, and lots of that deep, rumbling oak aging taste. This is a high-drama brew, and more than 4 ounces would be a bit much, but otherwise I like it. Hopefully Bagby did too, leaving this as a sort of final legacy to a San Diego institution. 28/12/2012 Brasserie 4:20 (tap). Bevuta al Pizza Port Tap Takeover. Nera, impenetrabile, schiuma beige-cappuccino leggera e poco persistente.
So stoked to have the chance to drink this. Even better is that I was drinking it with the guy who blended it (thanks Nacho!) Pours dark with a decent size tan head. Wow, having had the chance to drink a lot of Farley, that beer has taken over the nose here. Vanilla, coconut, booze, chocolate, cherry, peaches, wood. Taste is well balanced sweet with just a little bitter. Mouthfeel is smooth as silk, creamy, heavy and has a long finish.
