On tap at PP Carlsbad a few weeks back. Color was a dark brown to black. Aroma of roasted malt, with a lot of citrus. Really nice aroma. In the flavor the "dark" component was largely overshadowed by a very good IPA. Hoppy and citrusy. Aubrey (3516) - Bellingham, Washington, USA - MAY 4, 2008
2008 Boulder Strong Ale Fest: Deep burgundy with a frothy, light-tan head. I thought the mouthfeel was a bit underwhelming; light on the tongue with prickly carbonation. Malts were dark and roasted. Mild, tar-like sweetness with some chocolate mixed in. Alcohol was hidden pretty well. NobleSquirrel (3439) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 26, 2008
UPDATED: FEB 7, 2009 draft at DLD. Very interesting beer, nose is distinctly of pot and pungent hops. Taste is comparable. Very hoppy with a minimal amount of roastiness. Very nice beer with a very dark look. WeeHeavySD (3387) - Portland, Oregon, USA - APR 15, 2008
Tap @ O’brien’s. Pour took a long time, I guess the tap had just been put on. Pours black with a tan ring. Nose is malty and sweet, not really much hops on the nose. Taste is malty and hoppy and sweet, slight bitter, very nice, very tasty. Snojerk321 (2984) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 10, 2008
On tap @ Hamilton’s Tavern San Diego. A big black IPA, similar to stone 11th but bigger! Nice hoppy nose with some toasted malt. Big bitter finish.

RBSG 2008. I really enjoyed this beer, very nice floral flavors that worked off the malts up front. The malts had a nice depth, layers of caramel and cherry, hints of chocolate, all balanced against the hop finish. One of the better "black ipas" i’ve had. iowaherkeye (2804) - Ocean Beach, San Diego, California, USA - MAR 18, 2007
On tap @ the brewpub. Clear dark reddish brown with a 1/2 finger beige head that fades to a film. Aroma of grapefruit, burnt caramel, piney hops, and misc. nuts--pretty hopped up. Flavor was grapefruit and lots of pine, burnt caramel and burnt toast. Long lingering bitterness. Tingly moderate carbonation, medium body. Not normal for the style, though still pretty good. I almost wonder if I should have placed this under American Strong Ale, but they told me at the brewpub it was a Double IPA. DaSilky1 (2608) - San Diego, California, USA - SEP 19, 2009
Draft at small bar: Lacey off-white head, dark blackish appearance. Caramelly hop nose. Flavors caramelly and hoppy with notes of toffee. and a slight hint of medicine, and bursts of minty pine. Very drinkable beer and refreshing with a little toffee depth added to the usual west coast ipa flavors MIBRomeo (2579) - Wisconsin, USA - OCT 9, 2009
Black pour w/ a huge thick tan head and great lacing. Big sweet citrus hop aroma light floral ntoes some hints of strawberries, not at all what I expected from this pour. Good full nice palate. Outstanding, smooth fruity IPA just delicious. fordest (2469) - Santee/San Diego, California, USA - MAR 2, 2007
Draft at O’Brien’s. Like a good Schwartzbeir, this didn’t look anything like it tasted. Lots of hoppy aroma off this dark brown ale with some decent tan head... Hops were fruity, apricot and mango. Some citrus but more light fruit. Body was medium, and the flavor was more hops. Strong bitter and delicious. More pine on the flavor than in the aroma. Very very good.
