Vac (2445) - San Diego, California, USA - MAR 13, 2007
Pours with a dark brown body topped by a thick, off-white head with a good amount of lacing. It’s sweet and malty with a kick of piney hops and underlying caramel note and a bitter finish. Medium bodied, smooth and a touch dry.

On tap at DLD 2008. Pours a brown black with a white head. Hoppy fruit aromas. Lemons, oranges, grapefruits, and pine. Smooth medium body. The citrus, grapefruit, and pine flavors are accented by brown sugar and touch of roasted malts. Finishes with a slight bitterness. I had no idea it was 8.3%. Tasty beer overall.

Angeloregon (2055) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAY 4, 2008
On tap at Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA--Poured a deep brown body with a thin white head. Citrus hoppy aroma with some rich dark maltiness. Fruitiness quite enjoyable. Rich, sweet, candy flavor with a biting bitter finish. Nice beer!

Pint at PP Carlsbad. Debated on whether to get a pint of this and a taster of taster of Czar RIS, or vice versa. Wish I had gotten the vice versa. I don’t what it is about black IPAs, like this and Stone 11th. I don’t like them as much. It’s possible it is simply a delusion, but more likely, the limited number of Black IPAs just haven’t been that good compared to the best IIPAs. Dark black-red color. Head fades to a cottony wisp on the surface, with lingering lacing on the side of the glass. Aroma is mildly hoppy. This seems to happen often when I get a pint at a bar. I think it has something to do with the carbonation setup. Lots of grassy and grapefruit hops. Lots of bitterness. Not as smooth as other famous hoppy beers.

SDbruboy (1864) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 4, 2008
On draft at SD BrewCo during CDC week. Arrives a clear, dark brown color with garnet highlights when held to light and a small whitish head that leaves stringy lace. Aroma of nice roasty malts with plenty of hop character, citrus and pine prominent along with a burnt caramel scent. Flavor is good, more of the roasty malts, counterpointed by pine resin and lemon peel, also ash and hints of bitter chocolate. Mediu body, gently crispy carbonation.

mgumby10 (1856) - Jupiter, Florida, USA - MAR 20, 2007
On tap at Stone brewpub. Pours pitch black with a creamy white head. Monster piney hops aroma which you never expect from this dark of a beer if you dont know its an IPA. Tastes like an IPA, just darker. Its got the hoppy grapefruit taste to it, but nothing overpowering. Very nicely blended and well balanced. Just cool to drink a beer that dark that tastes so hoppy.

Not a great beer at all, not terrible, I wouldnt buy it again. I was expecting substantially more.

doubleo (1432) - San Diego, California, USA - APR 5, 2008
UPDATED: APR 11, 2008 On-tap at PP C’Bad. Pours very dark brown with a creamy off-white head that leaves lots of spiderweb lace. Smells dark, somewhat smokey malty and hoppy citrusy, grassy as well. Tastes hoppy but also roasty malty at the same time. The malts hit first and then the citrusy and grassy hops take over. Medium body, coats the mouth, active carbonation.

3.7
golubj (1377) - San Mateo, California, USA - MAY 29, 2008
Draft at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Brown / black pour with brown around the edges. Grapefruit hop aroma. Flavor is brown malt, slightly roasted and nutty, with grapefruit and pine hops being the dominant flavor. Decent bitterness. The rest of the beer outside the hops is unimpressive.

3.9
waolsen (1376) - Littleton, Colorado, USA - OCT 8, 2009
