Sample at the pizza port in Carlsbad. Citrus aroma, nice hops, slight pine in the taste. Good all around. Bartzilla (623) - La Mesa, California, USA - MAR 14, 2007
Tap @ Live Wire. Glad to see this again as I forgot to rate it after having some at Liar’s Club. Daunting, yet an easy drinker with a substantial hop finish. Pretty damn delicious. jarspag (601) - San Francisco, California, USA - APR 13, 2007
UPDATED: JUL 16, 2007 Now this brew is fantastic! No, really. Tap at Liar’s Club and Dtown Johnny Brown... flat out delicious. Very deceiving from the looks of it, opaque black color, but has the taste of a DIPA. Hence the name. Good balance, easy to slam down, but they def catch up with you. Too bad its all gone! Bring this one back! bikesandbeers (547) - san diego, California, USA - MAY 11, 2008
On Tap @ Hamilton’s Tavern, South Park SD. It was listed on the board as 10% IIPA, and i had no idea in would come out black. Of course it invites comparison to Stone 11th, but I think this was much better. the roasty malt arom blended well with the hops, and it hit the tounge with some carmel-choclate and then faded into pinney hops. Drank easy without much hint of alcohol. yum! carl4beer (522) - Fairfax Station, Virginia, USA - AUG 6, 2008
on draft at carlsbad. pours dark with thin tan head. aroma is citrus and some fruit. mouthful is full of hop that is back with roasted malt. had this right after the poormans, so it took a bit to appreciate the hoppiness after that hop bomb. very nice and well balanced black ipa.

UPDATED: AUG 17, 2008 On tap. Wow! What an experience. Flavors of licorice(!), grapefruity hops, and a little roasted malt. Dark brown color with a persistant tan head with excellent lacing on the glass. A little hoppy aroma. Completely unique and original. Liked it a lot. sauceyhops (104) - carlsbad, California, USA - MAY 25, 2008
On tap at Pizza Port C’Bad. Dark pour with a one finger head that laces nicely. Roasted aroma with plenty of pine/grass hop. Pleasant mouthfeel with flavors of roasted malt, nuts, hops, and a little bit of a smokey aftertaste. Great full flavor that compliments the hoppiness of this IPA. This is my drink of choice at PP. Draft at 4:20, Rome. Dark brown red color with huge creamy and cream color head. Massive hop aroma, lovely vanilla nose. Taste sweet, the hop dominates the roasted malts. These beer is like a vanilla ice cream in the mouth. Roasted malts and hops are perfectly matched, medium body. So smoothy and refreshing with a dry end. I love this beer. danem (15) - Bothell, Washington, USA - FEB 26, 2007
On tap at Pizza Port Calrsbad. Unusually dark , deep reddish-brown color, almost black with very little lacing. Roasted malt aroma with a slight hop note. Malty for an IPA but great balance, not as one dimensional as the more extreme IPAs out there. Hoppy bitterness comes out on the moderate finish. A great example of trying something different.
