Comes out of the tap a luscious, opaque, dark golden amber with a very thick and rather persistent light golden-tan head. Strong, malty aroma has fruity and caramel notes as well as a subtle woody undertone. Flavor has a woody core with fruity and malty notes and hints of caramel and horehound. Alcohol bite is strong but not too fierce. Firm-bodied texture is smooth yet edgy and leaves a strong and fairly persistent tingle. Finish has woody and fruity notes plus a respectable alcohol bite. Let this bombshell explode in your mouth! But please don’t get, ahem, bombed if you have to drive. ;) Sickboy282 (1114) - San Diego, California, USA - OCT 28, 2004
Had on cask at pizzaport-----this pours a hazy golden hue with a small off-white head. Aromas of fresh hops, pine, caramel, and a little brwon sugar. The flavor is amazing...almost more like a good double IPA with a fresh hops flavor. I will have to try on tap, because on cask, my ratings are beyond most. beerguy101 (5360) - Newark, California, USA - MAR 6, 2003
Deep orange color. Aroma is malty. A full-bodied Barleywine. Malty and hoppy and sweet. Complex mix of flavors. Some alcohol bite at 9.8%. Very smooth. Nicely balanced. Slight smokiness. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. 21iceman40 (1735) - Grafton, Wisconsin, USA - APR 4, 2003
This was smoked up the ass. Had a rich amber brown color to it and it gave a moderate amount of white head. Smells like an onslaught of alcohol and spices with some hops. Tastes respectably good. Great thick murky and malty with the smoothest finish of any barleywine i have had. CE619 (81) - san diego, California, USA - AUG 13, 2002
a very nice, lighter colored barleywine. seems to vary vastly from batch to batch, but after the initial oversweet, syrupy hoppiness goes away, a very good beer

GABF 2003: Clear orange with a large white head. Huge pine aroma, oily/syrupy mouthfeel, starts off lightly bitter and ends sweet. Long solid aftertaste. BeerLimey (2154) - California, USA - JUN 26, 2003
Creamy texture and flavor, comforting and soothing with its maltiness and high alcohol content. Mild bitterness in the finish. Vac (2445) - San Diego, California, USA - JUL 12, 2004
This barley wine pours with a deep amber body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. The aromais sweet and malty with a nice grapefruity hop note and hints of caramel and a fruity note. The flavor is slightly sweet and malty laced with fruity hop notes, some caramel, a touch of alcohol and fruit. Full bodied, relatively smooth and slightly warming. The beer pours a somewhat hazy deep orange with a modest head that is semi-creamy in texture and the color a light tan with a decent covering of lace. Nose is fusel alcohol, sweet malt, light bit of earthiness also noticed, and start is quite sweet, nicely malted and the top moderate in feel. Finish is stern in its acidity with the hops dynamically spicy; dry but somewhat sweet aftertaste, a decent a decent representative to the style and the 10.2 ABV does warm the tummy.
This barleywine looks really nice with a very vibrant orange/gold color with a nice white small head and great lacing. Aroma is alcohol intermingled nicely with malt and a crisp hop bite. Flavor is highly alcoholic with the malt and hop sublties overshadowed but the alcohol. Body is nice and rich with a long bitter finish. A decent beer.
