January 6th, 2012 - A flight of beer can be its own tasting narrative, touring the drinker through a menu of flavors and tastes. Some are good, some are bad, and all together can give the visiting beer drinker a pretty good idea of a brewery’s style. Though there are many ways a flight of beers can be assembled to produce this story, I always like it when there’s something sweet in there. Like a heavy meal, I can be stuffed to gluttonous gills, but there’s always a craving for at least a small piece of dark, intense chocolate. Similarly, a whirlwind tour of hops, malt and booze always leaves me thirsting for a sweet beer. That sweet beer at Pizza Port’s Carlsbad location is the Cow Stout. The aroma is sweet and mild, with a tongue tickling fuzzy palate, gingerly delivering the milk sugars. The flavor is mostly defined by flavors of light, raw cocoa, touched with a bit of tanginess. That bit comes from a nameless fruit juice kind of tanginess which, after more than a few ounces of other beers, is hard to pick out. It doesn’t mesh too, too well with the rest of the brew, but doesn’t spoil the batch either.

Draft at the brewpub. Poured black with thin white head a lacing. Aroma of sweet roasted malts, lactose, and chocolate. Mild, sweet flavor - milk chocolate, roasted malt. I typically don’t like too many milk stouts but this is pretty tasty.

Pours chestnut with milky thick head. Nose is sweet with ice cream and chocolate. Medium on the tongue with sweet, sticky malt up front moving to a the malted milk finish with a sugary bitter hop to finish.

A: The beer pours a dark brown color with a finger or so of khaki colored head. S: Just an overall pleasant sweetness to this. Nice lactose character with mild roasted malt character and quite a bit of chocolate (both milk and dark). A touch of coffee and some toffee sweetness. T: A roasted malt base, but the sweet milk sugar really adds a great flavor to this beer. A decent amount of chocolate flavor to go with it, a touch of toffee, and some hearty bread. Just a touch of coffee, too. M: Maybe on the light side of medium in body with medium carbonation. O: The sweetness was just about perfect. Very tasty beverage.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Pours dark brown with a thin beige head and a coffee aroma. There is a strong coffee and treacle flavor that sticks to the palate.

On tap at Stone. Dark pour, but not overly thick/viscous. Tasted along Craftsman Edgars it was not as thick in the mouth nor as rich on the palate. Definitely a nice light style stout.

This stout is very unimpressive. Carbonated, very strained. This beer has very little heft, some decent flavor at times, but overall not that great.
