Copper pour with small off-white head. Big hoppy grapefruit nose. Flavor was all hops at first with a touch of sweet malt, almost like a drop of honey towards the finish. Really didn’t notice the high alcohol, didn’t get that normal burn in the throat. eyesandsmiles (179) - Mission Viejo, California, USA - MAR 20, 2008
If you like Double IPA’s (which I do) this one is certainly a winner. Had it on location in San Celemente. shp555 (2024) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - MAR 15, 2008
Pours a copper color with a white head. Aroma is malty, caramel, skunky dank pot, and citrus hops. Flavor malty, citrus, and a dank pot finish. doubleo (1432) - San Diego, California, USA - MAR 10, 2008
On-tap at the source, PPSC. Pours a burnt orange color with a moderate semi-sticky white head, nice lace. Smells good. Smells sweet hoppy with just a little grassy citrus towards the finish. Taste is sweet hops up front, and then bitter, grassy through the middle. Grassy and a bit citrusy on the finish. Pretty bitter. Somewhat syrupy with good carbonation. trokini (1025) - San Diego, California, USA - MAR 10, 2008
Tap @ O’Brien’s. Pours clear darker gold with a frothy white head. Tangy aroma of pine, lemon peel, grapefruit, and grass. Sharp, biting taste. More grapefruit and fresh pine sap, with oranges, pepper, and apricot flavors. No real malt flavors to speak of, but as IIPA’s go, was not out fo balance. Loved it.

On tap at PP Carlsbad. Copper, small head. Rig, rough, biting hops. Citrus, bitter tropical fruit rind, alcohol. Not the most balanced to me...a hearty finish. badlizard (5533) - Berkeley, California, USA - DEC 22, 2007
On tap at Pizza Porrt. Golden amber with a fizzy wite head. Grapefruit, pine, and caramel aroma. Huge citrus and pine taste with a big bitter bite and a floral hoppy finish. BBB63 (6557) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - DEC 5, 2007
OC Tour, tap at brewpub: Golden hue with a small head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of herbal and piney hops, clove and flowery, grapefruit, lemon rind, caramel and bready malts. The taste has a nice balance of sweet malt and sharp hop bitterness along with grapefruity acidity. There was a hint of hay as it warmed. The mouth feel is smooth and lively, very refreshing for a big beer. Seemed fresh and was quite yummy. Get ya some. BrockLanders (780) - Panama City, Florida, USA - DEC 4, 2007
On tap at PP San Clemente. Dark amber pour....medium whitish head....very translucent. Nice citrus hop nose...super light tropical fruit notes...gets your attention. Great hop bomb with just enough malt to back things up....medium bodied and sticky...great bitterness in the end. Not the best I’ve ever had, but good enough to warrant bringing a growler back to the hotel room! Another great PP brew!! hapjydeuce (1001) - Carlsbad, California, USA - DEC 2, 2007
UPDATED: JAN 20, 2008 On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad for an update rating after the SAF 07. Appearance is really the only complaint I have here. Fizzy draft pour, just some small bubbly lace and no head. Killer aroma of pine sap, grapefruit and orange rind! Malt in the aroma is very well-balanced against the floral hop notes. Citrus notes are prominent in the flavor, with a superb hops resin bitterness to finish things off. Some lemon and rum fruitcake in there as well. Very nice crisp finish that evens out the beer nicely. This is what I look for in a good IIPA!
