Labeled Grumpy’s Strong Pale Ale (7.0% abv) on tap at Solana Beach on 11/30/06: Pours a transparent light copper bronze with a pillowy off-white head. Has a lightly grapefruity hoppy caramel malty nose. Body starts sweet and pale malty with a ton of fresh citrusy bittering and flavor hops. Finishes warming and bittersweet with a lot of hop resin. 21iceman40 (1735) - Grafton, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 19, 2006

Draught at the brewpub. Hazy pale yellow, rich head. Moderate lemonady mango-like hop aroma. Crisp and light bodied wth clean mouthfeel and medium bitterness. Fairly simple, but with refreshing qualities.

tap in Solana Beach - This a good example of a pale ale, the pleasant hoppy bitterness nicely balanced with the malts. Soft carbonation, nice full mouthfeel. Nothing astonishing here, but I could easily sit back and enjoy a few pints. jimbowood (1036) - Freeport, Georgia, USA - DEC 29, 2005
Tasted on draft @ Solana Beach location. A great, drinkable, hoppy American pale ale. goldtwins (4320) - Nesconset, New York, USA - DEC 20, 2005
UPDATED: FEB 5, 2007 Tap @ Carlsbad: Clear yellow gold color with a medium white head. Light cirtus and fruity aroma and flavor. Some caramel malt. For a medium sized head the carbonation was low. 7/4/7/3/14Hairofthedog (419) - San Diego, California, USA - OCT 9, 2005
Had this a year later on tap at Solana and this time it was listed as a 7% strong ale rather than a pale. Clear amber color with a small white head. Hop forward aroma with grapefruits and sweaty hops. The caramel barely has a chance to peak out. Big fresh hop flavor. Pine and grapefruits. The hops were big all the way around but very drinkable. The score is for the strong ale version.
The aroma had big citrus, orange zest, pine, and hops. The beer poured a yellow color w/ thin lasting head and lacing. I also noted that there was some slight haze in the color. The flavor had oranges, pine, and a slight light fruit note. The mouthfeel was light and carbonated. Schultsc (572) - San Diego, California, USA - SEP 17, 2005
Clear, light gold color with a nice fresh hops aroma with a bit of fruit. Even, mild bitterness with quite a bit of hops flavor and very little maltiness--quite nice. Very flavorful and refreshing.
