On tap in Solana Beach. Awesome, mahogany reddish coloring with some slight haziness and a small, fizzy wisp of a head. Very hoppy aroma of freshly cut pine boughs and chokecherry, along with fresh rye bread and a touch of roasted brown sugar. Thick, juicy aroma is overflowing with hops. Texture is thick and slightly sweet, but too overpowering on the hops for a barley wine, in my humble opinion. Quite a strong, hoppy finish of white cedar cones. Overall a tasty brew, but a bit too hoppy for the barley wine style. luckygirl (1223) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - APR 28, 2006
Sampled at 4th Boulder Strong Ale Fest. Beer poured a clear, medium amber color with a small, frothy, off-white, mostly and quickly diminishing head. The aroma was sweet with light notes of toasted grain and caramel; heavily hoppy with notes of lemon, moderate notes of orange and grapefruit, light notes of herb; yeasty with light notes of cobweb/basement; trace note of peach and a nice trace note of starwberry. The flavor was lightly sweet, moderately-to-heavily bitter with a long, lightly bitter, grippy finish. The body was medium, the texture was velvety-syrupy and the carbonation was lively trokini (1025) - San Diego, California, USA - JUN 12, 2006
UPDATED: AUG 16, 2007 I am almost positive this is living under the assumed name of "Doc Mason’s RyePA" at Solana Beach. Pours a cloudy auburn with a tiny head that fizzles into an oily top. Decent lacing. Aroma is rye, caramel malt, and hops. Nice hop bite up front with a smoother rye and caramel back. Acidic and alcoholic finish. sersdf (1020) - chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 22, 2007
draft at liar’s. this was really good. barleywine? i guess maybe. i’d probably go with ASA. oh, i see the description includes that note. red, whatever. pretty close to Cain & Abel in aroma. hoppy and ryeish. more malty than that and way more rye. pretty balanced. well done. weeare138 (936) - Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 4, 2006
Thanks to hopdog for this hand filled bottle...
Pizza Port calls this a Barleywine.
Appears a hazy amber brown with a small white head that slowly fades out. Scattered lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of hoppy citrus, pine, caramel, and rye.
Taste is of the same aromas.
Mouthfeel is bitter, sweet, with an overkill on hops...could either use some aging, or some balance with more of that caramel malt.
Drinkability isn’t bad. Citrusy, piney, fun treat with a mild alcohol presence.

Deep amber red with a thin white tan head. Very nice lacing. Aroma of caramel malt and slight fruit. Good balance of generous hops and malt. Pleasant length and finish. Great beer. UselessGdTaste (365) - Long Beach, California, USA - APR 20, 2007
Lots of hopps without much support. Tastes like the foundation for the hops got lost. Hops are great though. y0cola (361) - fremont, California, USA - FEB 18, 2007

Tap @ PP Carlsbad. Almost clear copper w gold/beige head, good lace. Aroma is amazing piney, resinous, hops w a creamy malt background. Flavor is quite hoppy, piney, potent hops with a good hop burn & semi sweet grain/malt flavor. Spicey. Alcohol is noticable, Into the full bodied range. I felt it was a bit unbalanced towards the hops though. auto (163) - California, USA - FEB 19, 2007
