Clear reddish amber appearance, good head formation. Intense hoppy aroma, spicy grapefruit. Spicy grapefruit, intense hoppiness immediately hits the palate and dominates through to a biting bitter finish, accompanied by licorice and chocolate undertones. Blind tasted this at first and thought it was a double IPA, intensely hoppy for the style. But I do have a hard time complaining about that. nightrider (754) - encinitas, California, USA - APR 16, 2007
Deep amber red with a thin white tan head. Very nice lacing. Aroma of caramel malt and slight fruit. Good balance of generous hops and malt. Pleasant length and finish. Great beer. marcus (10864) - Sacramento, California, USA - FEB 23, 2006
On tap at Toronado. This dark brown ale poured with a short tan head, eliciting a very odd naphtha-like aroma. However, the flavor was very well-balanced with a hoppy finish. billk (353) - Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, USA - APR 3, 2006
Tap @ PP Carlsbad. Almost clear copper w gold/beige head, good lace. Aroma is amazing piney, resinous, hops w a creamy malt background. Flavor is quite hoppy, piney, potent hops with a good hop burn & semi sweet grain/malt flavor. Spicey. Alcohol is noticable, Into the full bodied range. I felt it was a bit unbalanced towards the hops though. BückDich (5477) - McCall, Idaho, USA - APR 4, 2006

Dark amber mahogany color with thin head and light lacing. Nose of pummelo rind mixed with light orange liquor and a splash of caramel. The flavor is similar with lots of grapefruity hops and creamy musky rye. A nice blend of hops and malts. The rye adds a light earthy chewy character to the mix. Double Red? Why not. Extreme? you bet. Delicious? Word! Unbalanced? This is San Diego, you know it is!
UPDATED: AUG 16, 2007 I am almost positive this is living under the assumed name of "Doc Mason’s RyePA" at Solana Beach. Pours a cloudy auburn with a tiny head that fizzles into an oily top. Decent lacing. Aroma is rye, caramel malt, and hops. Nice hop bite up front with a smoother rye and caramel back. Acidic and alcoholic finish. auto (163) - California, USA - FEB 19, 2007
smells like weed smells like some nice purp. dark colour a white head, pretty thin but a good flavour ends a nice weedy or some kind of vegetable, pretty good not bad sersdf (1020) - chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 22, 2007
draft at liar’s. this was really good. barleywine? i guess maybe. i’d probably go with ASA. oh, i see the description includes that note. red, whatever. pretty close to Cain & Abel in aroma. hoppy and ryeish. more malty than that and way more rye. pretty balanced. well done. drewbeerme (3921) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 7, 2007
sampled on tap at the 5th Boulder Strong Ale Fest. i’m surprised this is listed as a BW after tasting it. I think it’s more of an american strong ale but whatever. nose has PNW hops, caramel. flavor is a little to hoppy with nice rye and caramel notes. a tasty beer indeed. Lots of hopps without much support. Tastes like the foundation for the hops got lost. Hops are great though.
