On tap @ Pizza Port Bressi Ranch. Just about black in color with a khaki head. Juicy pineapple, lots of roasted malts, and some grapefruit. Pretty dank. A little more chocolate than I’d care for, though. Flavor is really intense on the pineapple and grapefruit. Good piney bitterness. Some sweet licorice candy and a bit of coffee. Pretty roasty as well. Maintains the hop character well despite the malt profile. GT (10000) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 8, 2015

>> Tarantulas 2.1 7.5% from OB. Ridiculous pour- inky black with incredible rocky latte foam, infinite retention, great lace. Melted orange chocolate bar nose with pine resin, marijuana, pot brownie, cocoa powder, grilled fruit, spicy habanero. Taste is pot brownie, silky chocolate cake, dense, dessert like, melted chocolate bar, earthy/spicy bitterness. Rich, denser palate, mild chalkiness. Overall a monster Black IPA.
On tap @ PP Ocean Beach: Poured a dark black liquid with a firm layer of foamy head. Aroma is mildly hoppy with a hint of citrus juice or citrus peel. The flavor is subtle with a bitter bite of hops but with minimal notes of roasted malts. Palate is heavily carbonated with tiny explosions of bubbles while I swallow each gulp that at times seems to be similar to drinking a soda pop such as Dr. Pepper or anything similar. asheft (3082) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 28, 2012
[on tap at OB Pizza Port]
Citrus and cat pee aroma with some sweet base malt and apricot and celery notes. Almost opaque black under a tawny flannel blanket. Almost salty pine and bitter cat pee hops flavour that is dry and bitter with black malt. Almost smokey. Slightly astringent feel with medium carbonation and a light to medium body. Draught Black with ruby highlights; small cream head; Hoppy, dry hops, hopbales, tad of ureum. Very surprising, perfumey flavoured, with lavender and other faint herbal flavours - and little hop?!? Medium bodied, quite slick, slowly fading flavour. Good, but taste has surprisingly little hopflavour, at least for an IPA, black or otherwise.

Served on tap at Port OB. The appearance is a deep brown almost black hue. The nose is full of woody pine hops with a bit of grain or husks. The flavors are full of spruce pine, earthy/woody hops, a touch of pepper. The roasted malts are not here like they were in the 2.0 despite a similar color. More of a pure IPA profile going on. Nicely carbonated mouth with a slight drying but not uber-bitter. A very tasty brew. iowaherkeye (2703) - Ocean Beach, San Diego, California, USA - APR 24, 2012
Phone rate. Tap at OB. Black with brown edges and a small clingy beige head. Aroma of chocolate malt and pine hops up front, some light sweaty citrus and biscuit malt following. Flavor is quite piney with a citrus rind zest thing going on. Reminds me of Pine-Sol without the cleaner notes, so in a good way, also some good danky notes. Only a little caramel chocolate going on by way of malt. Finish was dry, bitterness peaked at a 5, tinge of earth. Burps tangerines. Low prickly carbonation with medium body. Must’ve worked out some kinks in this batch, as I don’t usually like the style, and I rarely rate anything higher than Dakine. Rerate added 0.3 points from a growler <1 day old, and will amend this accordingly over the next couple weeks, as I’m sure it’ll be on tap a little while.
