Aoril 13th, 2012 - Pizza Port does good work across the board. Be it discs of carbohydrates and fats, or beers of any color or gravity, I never feel nervous when ordering something new, untested and untried. This includes their 2012 Barleywine, which begins with a heavy, creamy, clotted aroma, a high and dry hoppy profile, and a malted toastiness. The flavor brings the expected bundles of flavors and tastes, including a heavy, world-turning booziness, deep and sweet brown sugars and molasses and a high alcohol burn on the aftertaste. More notable is the overly pronounced and ll balanced hoppiness. The hops flavor whips like a bough in the winter wind, lashing with a harshness that’s comfortably bucolic, and so much so that it pushes back against the slow, enveloping tide of sugars. I don’t know how they did it, or if the extra push of bitter hops was even intentional, but I like it, and would gladly have this against to pair with a heavier, stickier and sweeter pizza from Pizza Port.

Burnt orange pour at GABF. Light head. Hoppy barleywine. Very hoppy actually. Some light malty sweetness sneaks around.

GABF 2013. Pours a pretty clear deep orange appearance with a light brown head. Caramel, chocolate, toffee, a bit herbal aroma. Really pretty sweet, caramel malty, brown sugar flavor with a touch of dark fruits. Kind of too sweet for me but not bad.
