Speltor Blonde. Pale gold. Sparse head. In the nose, seeds (mostly pumpkin) in the first impact, developing to cereals. Hazelnut notes. Some bitter. A bit waterish. Light body.

Bottle, bought @Citti, Flensborg. Pours clear golden with a small, creamy, white head. Aroma has sweet malts, light maize, a hint of butterscotch. Medium carbonation, rather thin and kinda grainy mouthfeel. Flavour is sweet, has some wheat notes, light grassy hops and a metallic edge. Sweet finish.

Bottle from Mercearia Bio, Portimao, Portugal. Hazy amber coloured with a strong malty and grassy flavour, toffee and floral notes followed by a spicy, warming fruity finish.

Bottle from Bio City, Nice as Biere Bio Speltor. Cloudy blond colour with a very thin head. There’s nothing spectacular about this, but it has a really nice and subtle barley flavour to it with a fair smoothness within its texture. You drink this way too fast because of it.

Special take on the Hefeweizen theme by replacing 50% of the wheat by spelt and brewed for an abbey in Rüdesheim. Off-white, coarsely structured, stable head, colour of ’old gold’, misty. Spelty, wheaty, grainy aroma with hints of hay, gooseberry, kiwi, jute, cooked potato. Berries and some apple in onset, smooth mouthfeel, sourish and unbalancedly spicy basic taste, no trace of the usual goodies in Hefeweizen (the banana- and clove-like accents or the creamy mouthfeel), finishing lightly hoppy, but mainly neutral and watery. Disappointingly unbalanced.

330 ml bottle as “Moulin des Moines Speltor” bought at Organic Bliss in Causeway Bay.

Cloudy hazy amber orange colour with traces of yeast sediments; One-quarter finger head and white foam which fades in 20 seconds; Good sticky lacing and slight carbonation; Sweet and dull aroma of malt, with caramel, sugar syrup, faint orangey ester, yeast, and hint of wet cardboard; Close to light sweet taste of light malt, with spelt, light phenolic, wood, faint fruit ester, very light lemon, bitter hops and light grass; Light body, watery palate; Mouth feel is like a low-alcohol Pale Lager: light barley maltyness, the coarse taste of spelt is here, plus the typical LA beer’s choking woody taste give an overall rough feeling but lightened by its thin body, makes it bearable; some remnant phenolic and ester characters reminiscent of Hefeweiss or Belgian Ale, just barely… Hoppiness is zero nose. Very light lemon and grass in taste. Very low bitterness for a very abrupt, light-malty finish; Slightly dry after taste. Quite easy but awkward to mouth.

Comments: Whereas Alsfelder treats its Landdinkel as a pretty decent Hefeweiss, this one’s Pale Lager approach results in a barely drinkable low alcohol-like beer, with those bits of phenolic and estery elements are going nowhere. It’s in limbo, and with quality like this, it makes me wonder why the Riedenburger Brauhaus didn’t go out of business sooner than later. Thanks but no thanks.

Getreidig mit einer leicht muffig Zug, dazu ordentlich im Dinkel mit einem mehr als brotigen Ende. Geht so. Eigentlich nicht als das zu bezeichnen, was man weithin als Bier kennt.
