Hommel is the local abbreviation of humulus, from the botanical name for the hop plant. Confusingly, it also means bumble bee in Flemish. Poperings Hommelbier is a hoppy, golden-bronze, ale. It is made from a blend of winter, summer and aromatic pale malts.

11.2oz bottle in a tulip. Pours deep amber with a fluffy, cream-colored head. Aroma of spicy yeast, caramel malts, and a good amount of floral hops for a Belgian beer. Flavor the same, with a good balance from the malts. Average texture. A good Belgian ale.

Hazy dark yellow with a frothy head. Aroma is hoppy, lemon, grass, malt and yeast. Taste is somewhat bitter and medium sweet with hoppy notes.

Jabic (733) - Plainfield, Vermont, USA - JAN 11, 2018
UPDATED: JAN 12, 2018 Ar: Mossy, herbal hops; slight lemon and grass; a bit of almond and sherry; some cracker. Ap: Golden; hazy with discrete particulates; medium-large off-white head with good retention, settles into a frothy cap of foam. T: Pronounced oxidation; sharp sherry, old malt syrup; medium bitterness; black pepper; almond and sherry on the finish. P: Medium body with very high carbonation; medium-dry finish. O: This beer has seen better days--heavily oxidized, so hard to really taste the base beer; a bit odd, given that it has a best by date of April 2018 printed on the label.

People who are fond of hoppy Belgians like XX Bitter will likely find an ideal drinking companion in Hommel. This brew has a generally clear golden pour and a frothy head. Earthy, yeasty, spicy, and hoppy aromas. Leafy, floral, peppery, clove-like, and grassy flavors. A bit of cracker-like malt. A crisp, refreshing feel. There's a great deal of earth flavor in here without tasting completely like yard trimmings. Excellent.

fkoolen (1400) - Maastricht, NETHERLANDS - DEC 4, 2017
UPDATED: DEC 4, 2017 Bottle at home. Almost clear golden colour, big foamy white head. Grassy nose, light citrus. Taste is very crisp and clean, grassy hops, light malty base, light honey: great balance. Lively carbonation, medium body.

Bottle. Cloudy appearance with sediment. Tiny bubbles on the head. Dark orange. Banana aroma, some dusty notes, light floral elements. Some spice. Flavor has a bit of cardboard, dry bitterness. Floral hops, grassy.Bubbly mouthfeel. Yeast character still plays a part in this. An older bottle, some of the hop vibrancy may have dropped off.

MartyW (412) - DENMARK - NOV 27, 2017
UPDATED: NOV 27, 2017 Bottle. Slightly hazy golden with a good, lasting white head. Yeast, spices, citrus, alcohol, hops. Not as much IPA-like as I had expected, but decent brew.

Clean tasting blonde with a hint of citrus and light hops. Distinct taste from other Belgian blondes. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

PlutonowyMan (906) - Baardegem, BELGIUM - NOV 2, 2017
UPDATED: NOV 2, 2017 Kolor złoto pomarańczowy, zamglony. Piana bardzo okazała, barwy białej, długo trwała. Aromat chmielowy, owocowy. wyczuwalna belgijska drożdżowość, akcenty miodowe. Smak podobnie jak aromat typowo belgijski. Drożdże, przyprawowość, nuty pszeniczne i miodowe. Finisz cytrusowy, cytrynowy. Goryczka delikatna, chmielowa. Wysycenie dość wysokie, sprawia, że piwo bardzo szybko zasyca, ciało średnie w kierunku do pełnego. Pijalność bardzo wysoka.
