COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
On June 29th, 2012, a “land hurricane” wreaked havoc on the DC Metro region and Port City’s hometown. Knocking over trees and powerlines, this derecho (day-RAY-cho), as the storm is called, left a million without power during a record-breaking heatwave. While the brewery was not damaged, we were left without power and searching for a way to SAVE THE BEER.

Procuring a generator, we were able to keep the brewery online and the beer saved. One batch of lager fermented at higher temperatures, producing what is called a California Common beer, or steam beer.

The storm left us a gift: our lager had changed into a golden opportunity, DERECHO COMMON.

DERECHO COMMON is deep golden in color, and has toasty, biscuity malt flavors. It is medium bodied with an assertive hop profile. It is dry hopped with Amarillo hops, which give it a spicy, citrusy hop kick on the finish.

Elwood (3347) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - SEP 24, 2012
Serving: Draft at Tuscarora Mill. It pours a light gold color with a small white head. The nose is light with a little bit of florals and grass. It’s rather thin on the tongue with notes of grain, grass, light citrus, and a touch of apple. Rather abrasive bitter finish. The flavors don’t all work together leaving sort of a jumbled mess on the tongue. Not impressed.

$2.79 single from Total Wine & More - West Richmond. Pours golden, pale, small white head. Citrusy aroma, mostly lemon, some floral hops as well. Flavor is absolutely lemon - almost lemon pledge (which actually isn’t a bad thing), some grass (little), and some toast (little). Not bad at all.

Kinz (3786) - Glen Allen, Virginia, USA - DEC 28, 2016
Deep gold, slight head. Aroma is mildly of crackery malt, faint toast, and a bit of grassy hops. Flavor matches. Somehow the word "muddy" comes to my head. Not bad, just didn’t get me going.

Tasted after a bike ride. Pours slightly hazy amber. Good sized white head. Aroma is biscuity, pleasant. Taste is biscuity, malty, hints of honey and of a sharp hop bitterness, maybe some citrus rind. Quite refreshing on a hot day, in keeping with the name.
