Better known by locals as Beast Mode this is an Imperial IPA in the mold of our beloved running back, Marshawn Lynch of the Seattle Seahawks. A simple and old school recipe built tough with pale and rye malt and loads of Citra and Simcoe hops throughout. With legs always moving, there is nowhere to go but forward! Go Hawks!

Pint at the brewery. Fine appearance, cloudy dark golden, smells decent enough. Great lacing. Taste is good albeit a bit blah, but the bitter aftertaste is really extreme on this one. I love bitter beer and this one was a tad too bitter even for me. I’m looking forward to trying their IPA that is one notch down from this dipa.

Draft at PT Taproom. Slightly cloudy gold, white foam. Green, rich, fresher hop aroma. Lovely. Clean bitter, rich earthy pine hops. Citra and simcoe would make sense for this balance. Rich, big, tasty but not my vibe really. All the best with your retirement, Beast Mode.

Bottle:   Dirty orange, lots of floaties, somehow with a bright hue, moderate to large foamy white head, fairly nice lacing.   Soft citrusy like hop to the nose.   Minor sweetness.   Very smooth and citrusy on the tongue, moderate hops and bitterness.   Surprised by this one, clean, nice balance of hops with the mildly sweet maltiness.   This one is a pleasure to drink.   Did I mention smooth?   This one seems like a solid example to me, not a hop bomb that one typically finds in California with no body to it, and not a malt bomb that is just extremely bready without much hop attitude.   This one has great balance, its clean, crisp, hoppy and sweet, with a lingering candied citrus peel flavor profile.   Moderate to full in both body and mouthfeel.   Finish is slightly oily.   WOW, real impressed with this one!   A local favorite for sure!   Nice work PT!

On draft at the brewery. Cloudy orange pour, with an off white head. Citrusy hops, bready, pine resin, sugary, caramel background malt, and notes of buttered popcorn.

Exceptional. Murky copper color and thin silky white head. Aroma is an abundance of tropical citrus. Pineapple and grapefruit. Body is creamy and smooth with modest carbonation. Flavor is almost candy fruit sweetness. Pineapple, grapefruit, mango, pine and butter toffee. No discernible alcohol. Damn fine.

Draft at NCBC. Pours a cloudy burnished medium amber with a loose white head and plenty of stringy lace. Big buttery nose, just shot through with movie popcorn, alas. This beer must be a lot better closer to the source. Creamy medium body with soft carb and a slick, slippery quality. Toast, caramel, and butter on the mid palate. Really had high hopes for this one, too. Clearly a nice hop bill showing in the background. Have to come back and re-rate.

On tap at Bottleworks, pours a cloudy orangey amber with a medium white head. Aroma of shitloads of resinous hops, plenty of tropical fruits (mango, pineapple), and a whopping caramel malt backbone. Flavour reveals insane amounts of bitter resinous hops, lots of bitter zesty grapefruit peel, and more dry hops. Coats the palate with dry –hoppy goodness. A most excellent harsh, palate-scorching IIPA.

Deep ruddy gold, fabulous sea-foam head, with awesome ’ice-cream’ lacing. Looks gorgeous in the tulip. The nose is a stiff-arm of bold citrus, super-fresh piney hop oils, and nicely toasted biscuit malt. The citrus profile leans more toward orange and tangerine instead of grapefruit (good dose of amarillo in there?). Lightly sweet, medium creamy body, solid carb, with a great shock of drying bitterness. The robust, Lynch-like, malt backbone holds everything together wonderfully. It really pops mid-palate, muscles its way through, and carries the assertive hopping toward a beautifully bitter finish. This one really surprised me, and fit my mood/taste perfectly at the time. That is what it is all about. Easily my favorite beer from Port Townsend Brewing to date. I would love to see this one made again. Good job, guys! Go Hawks!
