COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In response to growing interest in American style pale ales the Porterhouse has decided to resurrect a beer from our past. Based on a beer brewed somewhat ahead of its time, in our brewpub days, Hop Head is a highly aromatic, bitter, pale ale, made with the intention of satisfying the hop heads amongst us. Amber coloured, with a distinct malt character, generous use of hops for bittering and the triple addition of cascade and Hallertau Northern Brewer hops gives a conspicuous citrus character for both aroma and flavour. Along with a slightly higher alcohol content this results in a rich, fruity beer with an oily, citrus hop character and wonderfully rich, full mouthfeel.

330ml ring-pull bottle from Beers of Europe. 5%. Very slightly hazy, transparent, amber. Small, off-white head that persists well. Mid-high carb. Aroma - Quite malty for an IPA; grainy, caramel malt. Just a bit pissy & yeasty, but not too noticeable. Light, zesty hop aromas; distinct tangy smell. Piney, grassy and a bit orangey citrus. Taste - Balanced. Sweet, orangey, blossomy hop notes and caramellish malt upfront. Tangy, citrussy hop resin, giving way to moderate bitterness stuck on tongue for a short time. Some darker malt flavours noticeable at the end, with some trace lightly burnt, bitter choc flavours on the tongue at the finish, along with alpha acid and bits of citrus. Mid-light, slightly creamy body, quite refreshing and palate-cleansing, which is very enjoyable and makes this quite easily drinkable. This grew on me a fair bit as i drank it. Seemed ok at first, but began to realise it wasn’t as straight forward as i assumed. Some interesting, darker malt flavours for an IPA and decent, tangy hops, with mid citrus levels.

UPDATED: MAR 28, 2013 Clear amber, frothy white head. Caramel malt, resin, pine hop nose. Bitter hop middle, hint of caramel. More bitterness in the finish. Little unbalanced for my taste, way too bitter with no malt character to balance it out.

Sample from cask at Porterhouse Central. The beer is a clear reddish-amber color with a medium thin creamy white head that recedes slowly. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of caramel malt and citrus. Light body with flavors of citrusy hops and sweet malt. The finish is malty up front with a fruity hops aftertaste. Decent overall.

Clear amber beer, frothy white head. Softish palate. Mildly tangy orange. Splash of tea and then a sweet piney orange finish. All over the place but very drinkable and strangely endearing!
