part of beer sampler 09/21/08 very dark, but without the grainy bitterness found in many stouts, plus a little sweetness from the oatmeal. not much hop flavor, but a very nice taste. lb4lb (2628) - Austin, Texas, USA - SEP 4, 2008

Pours mostly black with a fizzy beige head. Smell is not too impressive. Mild, with some light roastiness in the background. Taste is very dull with some roastiness and maybe some oat, but I’m probably reaching after reading the description. Really, very mild flavor and too high carbonation for an oatmeal stout. Comes off too fizzy and not really creamy. Not offensive, but impressive for a brewery that makes the top or one of the top ranked beers in the world. There is a weird taste in the finish as it warms too...
5.5% ABV. Pitch black. Roasted oatmeal smell. Taste of dark chocolate malts, followed by a touch of dark fruits. Medium palate (third pint glass at GBBF, 05.08.2008). urnamesucks (92) - New York City, New York, USA - AUG 20, 2008
Good stout if you are a stout fan. Was a little more coffee flavor than I would like, but above average. Svesse (8942) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - AUG 16, 2008
(Cask at GBBF, London, 5 Aug 2008) Black colour with frothy, brown head. Roasted, hoppy nose with fruity/citrussy hop notes, pine and resin. Malty taste with soft roasted flavours and notes of piney hops. Not that bitter, distinct but rather short finish. Lovely balance. Very drinkable and very nice beer.

Coca cola coloured with a tan rim. Creamy malt with some nice roast coffee notes. A slight sourness with a fairly high level of sweetness. Not particularly balanced and it’s certainly not brimming with character but it’s ok.
Cask conditioned - gravity dispense - GBBF 2008. A black beer with a tiny ring of tan head. The aroma is fairly sweet and sugary with some light roast. Pretty unpleasant in the mouth with sour milk and chocoloate. Very disappointing. cgarvieuk (26365) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - AUG 12, 2008
UPDATED: OCT 13, 2012 Cask at GBBF 2008 ... deep black ... sweet pine hop nose ... light sweet malts ... little pine and lime ... quite a lot of hop in linger ..3.3

Cask at GBBF 08. Black, thin tan head. Hoppy liquorice aroma. Peppery hop, tarry, liquorice mlats. It’s a wee bit odd. Hops are too dominant and the liquorice isn’t my favourite flavour. Hops have a bit of cat pee to them. oh6gdx (26485) - Vasa, FINLAND - AUG 8, 2008
Black colour, no head. Aroma is mild roast, old coffee, licorice and some caramel malts. Flavour is the same with the roast being more evident. Smooth and refreshing.
