COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Porter, a strong flavored dark ale with full body, medium hops and a slightly smoky finish, is a style that enjoyed enormous popularity during the 1800's, when it was the drink of the working man, especially dockmen and warehouse porters, and is seeing renewed popularity today.

Pours brown to black with a tan head. Smell is mild cocoa. Taste is mild, dry, bitter cocoa. Didn’t care for this.

On tap at the brewpub:
Toasted bread and roasted crumbs...Lots of caramel sweetness over peachy fruitiness...Weirdly close to a black and tan in its conflicting flavors, relatively important sweetness, and overall drinkability...An important bitterness comes from the roasted malts and the accompanying hops...

UPDATED: NOV 10, 2004 2004 draught. Appearance shows a dark brown/near black body with a tinge of violet peeking through near the edges of the glass. Low head retention. Aroma seems quite bitter and black with lots of coffee, though a bit more roasty and full than the Smuttynose. Flavor turns out to be not dominated by black malt and instead is quite roasty and coffee-like. Some good sweet tones throughout and though this is a pretty dry rendition, it dosent get too bitter and astringent. As it warms the body produces an almost velvety sensation on the palate. Ends with good bittering hops, not overdone. Lightly nutty and has hints of mocha. Medium to medium-full body and little to no thinning.

- dark black color with brown overtones, short white head, very nice roasted malt aroma, burnt, with a strong bitter coffee presence, clean; bitter, burnt malt flavor, coffee flavors, also has a fruity-winey-alcohol flavor especially in the aftertaste, slightly dry, light mocha flavors are noticeable too - complex, good texture, very well done
