Porter is a classic London beer style with a long and colourful history. It originated in the city around 300 years ago and while there are conflicting accounts of the exact origins of Porter, it’s clear the beer has been enjoyed by hard-working Londoners for centuries.

Bottiglia.

Day 16 of the Honest Brew Advent Calendar. 330ml bottle, unfiltered. Fuck this is good. No gimmicks, just bloody good brewing. Loads of roast malt flavour - bags of it. No hops messing it up. Bloody smooth. Great body - feels huge and silky and full, way above 6.5%. Gosh, this is almost perfection. Love it to bits.

UPDATED: DEC 14, 2017 Lightly creamy and smoky nose. Creamy-dry and roasty with hints of treacle, coffee and burnt toast. Dry-sweet and burnt-bitter finish. Gorgeous.

Bottle from Oddbins. Appearance - a touch lively on opening and some spillage. It settles to a very dark brown to black colour and there's a nice fluffy fawn head. Nose - hazelnuts and light toffee. The chocolate comes through but there's a wee wild yeast note lurking. Taste - milk chocolate and hazelnuts. Loads of Snickers on the finish. Palate - medium bodied and creamy. Nice, long, rich but elegant finish. Overall - the wild yeast edge was slightly off-putting and I don't think I've tasted this in its perfect condition. However, the malts come through brilliantly.

33cl bottle. Dark red brown black. Thin brown head. Taste is medium bitter and light sweet. Dry medium body. Aroma and flavour is tobacco, toffee, chocolate, coffee. Even though it’s good, I think the beer suffered with the trip.

Leighton (23090) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUN 12, 2017
Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up at Clapton Craft. Pours deep brown with a creamy, beige head. Nice roasted malts in the nose, some ash, tobacco, earth, cocoa. Light to medium sweet flavour with further ashy roast character, notes of dried berries, some leather, burnt brown bread, more earth. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Nicely balanced finish, with more ash and old leather, subtle vanilla pods, scorched earth. Lingering bitterness. A solid all-around porter.
