Bomber. Poured dark, clear brown with a disappearing head. Lightly sweet and cocoa aroma. Flavor complex salt with chocolate and toast. Overall a restrained, sophisticated and mature brew. Lovely.
January 2017 - Bottle share at Leighton’s. Thanks Leighton! As ’Pretty Things Once Upon a Time, 1939, No. 1 Ale’, 6.7%. Dark ruby brown, opaque, foamy brown head leaves dotted lacing. Aroma is toffee apple, Belgian caramel waffles, toffee cake. Body is light and frothy with tingly carbonation. Taste is sugary, woody, spicy with a salty finish. OK - bit overcarbonated. Nose is toffee, spice, fruit esters, light tobacco, dark malts.
Taste comprises liquid fruit cake, biscuit, charr, cocoa powder, toffee, fruit rinds, light spice.
Medium body, fine carbonation, semi drying close.
Decent sipper, fairly mellow for the ABV.

Bottle shared by Leighton at level 42. It pours darkest brown with a small beige head. The aroma is earthy, toasty, cocoa, wood ,dried fruits, raisin, dried fruits, spice and brown bread. The taste is slick, sticky, toasty, earthy, dried fruits, wood, spice, leather, brandy and toffee with a boozy finish. Medium - full body and fine carbonation. Farewell Bespin Bottleshare. Thanks to Leighton for this much wanted beer. Hazy amber beer, decent cream colour head. Palate is light, dry and has decent fine carbonation. Dry caramel - toffee malts. Not at all sweet. Mild spice. Ripe fruits and a mild floral bitterness. Dry finish. Ripe fruity bitter linger. A robustly old fashioned beer with good bottle aging on top of the retro style. Yeah - like the vibe on this one.
Bottle shared in London - sourced from. Pours an attractive clear ruby with a frothy, off-white head. The nose has some aged berries, leaves, lightly toasted grains. Medium sweet flavour with some brown sugar, more ripe berries, toasted brown bread, crackers, fruitcake. Medium to full bodied with fine average carbonation. Aroma is rum and raisin, musty, sweet nutty malts, slightly musty. Flavour is composed of semi sweet burnt toffee, dried fruits, hints of liquorice, slightly woody. Pretty good for the age. Deep mahogany, clear, with some mauve/taupe highlights. Not actually 100% sure what mauve or taupe are, but I feel like that’s accurate. Head is light beige, small and recedes to cover/ring very quickly. Kinda odd for a scotch ale.
Well, we have caramelized malt, toffee, raisins, caramel, chocolate and more caramel malt in the nose. Strong, quite unwavering. Definite esters add light cherries and pears, while some slight pruniness creeps in, thankfully. Like a stronger, more malt focused double brown. Berry skin and almost a glue-like ester seems to sit on the end....
Surprisingly less sweet than the aroma would suggest, with plenty of acidity/melanoidin-like fruitiness. Seems very caramelized up front, but attenuated through the middle of the beer ending actually somewhat dry, with anise, black pepper, tobacco and lots of prunes. Alcohol does cut through the palate somewhat, drying it, at least, but adding a sharpness that dosent belong. Texture is soft, malty, of course, and with a light carbonation. 5 or 6 sips in and I’m pretty tired of it. The strange alcohol sharpness-meets-caramelized malts-meets-vinous acidity just dosent work, palate-wise. I suppose I can see how this would have been pretty shocking and "revolutionary" for its time, but now it’s just kind of an alcoholic scotch ale without any particularly exciting nuances.
22oz bottle in a tulip. Pours very deep brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of slightly roasted, toffee, and nutty malts plus caramel, some light bitterness, and dough. 22oz Bottle, purchased at Track 84 - Warwick, RI. Well developed malt nose, with a hefty dose of warmth and limestone. This develops a really nice caramelized malt profile right up front, with sticky buns, praline, and toasted almonds. Really one of the best Scotch Ale caramelized malt flavors I’ve ever experienced. The downfall is that the finish is marred by too much roasted grain husk, as though there’s an unfortunately high percentage of dark chocolate malt, that leaves a raking sensation on the tongue that isn’t all that enjoyable. I realize as a historical re-creation, this may be faithful, but I still detracts from the drinking experience.
