This is a great ale. Dark brown almost black with a malty taste with just enough hops to my liking. The alcohol is a bonus.

From notes, 2/17/12: Poured from a 12oz bottle into a thistle glass. A: Dark reddish brown with red highlights around the edge. Towering light beige head that settles into a disc that stays around for a while. Sporadic lacing down the glass. S: A bit muted. Sweet malts with a slight roastiness. A bit of breadiness with some hops way in the background. T: Dark chocolate, bitter roast, sweet caramel toffee flavor. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. M: Carbonation is normal for style; mouthfeel slightly thin for the style. O: As a lover of the Wee Heavy/"Scotch" Ale style, I was missing the peat smokiness and hint of scotch Im used to. If not for those expectations, I wouldve enjoyed this more. Above average and worth a try.

Nice malty and grassy nose. Well balenced aroma. Great yeasty fruit with malt and hop structure. A little bit of everything. Not sure what it is but it is good. ---That dog will hunt!

Nothing like a good bottle of beer while you are grilling in the back yard during the winter months.. (yeah we do that in Texas because we can) at the first sip of this fine brew I fell in love. Dark color, medium body, tastes of coffee/chocolate and a wonderful aftertaste that i only wish could stay with me all day. Sadly this is a seasonal beer that is in limited supply before it even leaves the brewery.

Not very good. A lot of heat for a beer that should have that much. Got as an extra, I can see why now. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz bottle. Nice to break the string of below mediocre scotch ales. Nice dark brown pour with a generous head and a little cling. Nose of a malt bomb with peat and nuts. Taste follows the nose with a full bodied mouthfeel. I enjoyed this. It's no Big Sound or Alesmith Wee Heavy but it is certainly drinkable and worth having again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle - pours jet black with a minimal head. Has a roasted coffee aroma and smoky malty taste that lingers. Has a medium body.

Light coffee aroma and dark black body. Tiny crystal carbonation. Heavy, malty, and chocolate/coffee flavor. Lingering malt on end of palate, nice. Overall sweet. Not much hop flavor is apparent. Pretty good, best Rahr I have had so far.

UPDATED: FEB 14, 2016 re-rate 2/16 bumped from 4.0 Not sure I found this beer last year, but got my first 6 pack for 2016. BETTER and more complex than I remember. healthy bump in everything except aroma - more flavors than I remember including some light chocolate; perfectly balanced hops. may have to buy a case!>>>>>>>>>> that is gooood; between this and snowmagadden for my favorite rahr; new style for me and comparing this to Founders Backwood Bastard - they are different but both excellent (both a 4.0). bottle to glass dark brown pour with amber hue creamy palate - the taste is breat with many things happening - the creaminess, smooth hop/malt balance, slight roastedness at the end, slight toffee and I get a little cocoa on the back end. hides the 8.5% very well. I will puchase a six pack and will also share as extra in the future - this is very good!! nice job Rahr!!
