Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

Can: Pours deep, clear, cola-brown with a tight beige head. Lactic chocolate, earthy caramel scent. Taste is slightly bitter, roasty/earthy chocolate malt. Rich, almost sticky/tacky body/feel... Very decent, and pretty tasty and comfortable..... (A little bias on this one, as I’ve had the pleasure of having 11 pugs as my children in my lifetime.....) thanks to shrubber85 for the share.

This beer-flavored beer (triple-decocted, Munich Helles, for the technically inclined) was brewed on the South Side, for all the South Siders — wherever they may be. South Side Pride is our lightest offering, this is the conversion beer for your light beer drinker. Triple decocted for maximum flavor, we specially sourced undermodified malt to make it all work together. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Originally rated on 2/17/09. Not much in the aroma department, appearance was a deep brown/ black, with plenty of carbonation, decent head that left some lace. Mouthfeel was average with a carbonation bite. Flavors of toasted malts, and chocolate these were a bit on the light side though. Overall it is the best Rahr beer i have sampled yet, and its a decent interpretation of the style

Can. Sour milk, chocolate malt, and hay aroma. Chestnut brown with large tan head. Smoky, lightly sweet chocolate malt, and mildly bitter hay flavor. Good body. Tastes way better than it smells.

Pours mahogany, shimmery beige head, kind of fizzy. Aroma is caramel and earth. Somewhat crisp on the tongue. More caramel, tea leaves, celery, toasty malts. Not bad. Not remarkable.

Obtained with a number of other beers in a flight. Serves up very dark brown, almost black with a nice tan head. The scent is burned toast and I mean that as a compliment. A taste of the brew gives out smoke, molasses and more of that bread. Savoring it after swallowing I get a nutty finish, perhaps pecan. Black lagers with a higher alcohol kick do more for me. But I do not complain.

Half finger of head on a dark brown body. Aroma is roasted malt and a little caramel. Taste is roasty, toasty and caramel. Good profile. Texture is crisp with soft edges. A solid Schwartzbier.

Pours a dark, dark brown color. Not at all black when held to the light, even some clarity sneaks through. First striking feature is a well pronounced smokey character which is quite predominant both in the nose and taste. Excellent roast malt. Flavor is well developed but a little short of anything fantastic. Sometimes one-dimensional, simple roast caramel malt. A little bit of hoppy character somewhere in there. All in all a fresh black lager, very enjoyable.
