Bottle. Pours deep cherry mahogany color with a creamy tan head that lingers well and leaves good lacing. Aroma is surprisingly mild for an IIPA, but there’s a nice caramelish sweet malt scent with grapefruit hoppiness evident also. Flavor is much more bold with a rich well-roasted malt backbone and and nice biting hops to balance. Alcohol is surprisingly well hidden in both the aroma and flavor. Full, thick body and creamy carbonation. Very enjoyable, if not the top of the IIPA class. papajohn (1250) - San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA - OCT 2, 2004
The pour is a deep ruby color with a medium fading off beige head. Aroma is sweet and rich with hints of pineapple and citrus. Flavor starts burnt caramel sweet and fades into a rich sweetness that tames the tangy hop bitter finish. More barley wine like than IIPA (IMHO). 9% ABV very well hidden.
