draft at Gasthof Neuner in Ebensfeld, 11km from the brewery. 6.7% clear gold with a creamy white head with lasting retention. sticky honey glazed pastry malt with a smattering of reduced grain syrup and sweet crystalline sugar. very rich and hearty with warming stuff alcohols and sugar candy and spiced honey sweetness. yeast / minerals / sulfur egg shell notes grow as it warms and breathes, as do some perfumed banana esters. interesting beer, well-made, though not my preference, even in the cold of fall in Germany.

Draught @ Brewpub. Pours clear Golden with a White head. Sweet and Nutty Malty. Intensely soft and Chewy. Grains and grass with a Quite bitter finish. Dangerous and tuff!

My Bottom Line:
This super clean Heller Bock lays out honeyed cereals and bready softness in a very agreeable setting.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A dollop of foam tops the translucent golden.
-Malts flavors are clearly expressed while never relying on their residual sugars.
-Drinkability is quite high.
-The soft effervescence works well with this type of malt flavor.
-In the end though, I can’t say this was a memorable example. A good one? Yes.

On tap at the brewery pub.

On tap at the brewery. Clear amber colour lasting white head. Spicy hoppy aroma. Some sweetness. in the mouth some earthiness some warming malt. finish has decent spicy hop again. very competent. strongish though. enough for one.

Tap at Gasthof Neuner in Ebensfeld, Nov. 2012: Radiant blonde. Frothy white ring of foam. Pleasant nose of bright tropical fruits, vanilla wafer cookie, herbal and floral hops, vanilla cake and banana cream. Nice melanoidin character, as well. Creamy, delicate carbonation. Sweet and notably fruity, initially, with potent alcohol cutting through a bed of rich and beefy vanilla cake maltiness. Hints of toasted dough. Looming sugars and a slippery fruitiness contribute a limpness to the body which is compounded by the alcohol, but the malt remains fairly well structured and displays just enough melanoidins to keep things focused. Closes with a burst of bright and succulent floral hops, explosive and lustrous tropical fruitiness and stinging alcohol. Maybe a tad alcoholic and limp at times, but it’s got a nice punch of melanoidins, which, IMHO, is a requisite for the style. Very fruity house character and solid overall.

10 dl Syphon von Karl-Heinz. Golden to deep golden coloured, stable, beaten-egg-white-like head. Moderate sweetish-grainy nose. Moderate to solid sweet-bitter flavour with a light acidity. Increasing piney hoppiness in the malty-bitter finish. Good Bock, a bit sweet, but all in all well balanced........

100cl growler, courtesy of Frankenland. Clear, golden colour with a blonde medium-sized foamy head. Sweet and slightly grainy and gassy aroma with shy hints of citrus and a whiff of hops. Sweet flavour with little bitterness, medium to full bodied with a moderate carbonation. Grainy malty taste, all in all a bit one-dimensional with light herbal notes and alcohol showing up towards the finish. Not a real highlight but drinkable pale Bock [09.XII.08].
