Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine

Some of us have it and some of us dont. You know what were talking about. That quintessential mark of a true man of beer legend, the very badge of the great brew masters the world over. Around here, we call it beard envy. And like this robust beer, it speaks volumes with words like Put that razor down and take a drink. With flavors of toffee, raisins and dark fruit accentuated by vanilla and a hint of bourbon balanced by the resinous pine notes of Chinook hops, this barrel-aged barley wine masterwork is as bold and hearty as the beards we salute.

Pours up a clear amber color, topped with a durable off white head that leaves very good lacing. Sweet and appealing aroma with ample flavoring from the barrel aging. Some coconut. Smooth mouthfeel with medium carbonation and a full body. A bit hot on the alcohol. Taste is complex with notes of toffee, dates and oak wood.

Huge vanilla bourbon nose and flavor. Ka pow with the alcohol smack. Pours pretty auburn and leaves a lacy residue. Malt bomb with a nicely balancing hop spice. Heavy on flavor but good use of hops lend a pleasing drinkability. Nice sprightly carbonation at the very end does a nice job of cleansing the palate.

Bottle from Die Bierothek, Frankfurt. Hazy dark amber body with medium, fast-receding head. Nose is sweet, herbal, caramel and resin. Taste is of caramel, malts, bourbon, plums. Really nice. Creamy texture. Warming in the finish. Well done.

Slightly hazy amber color with off-white head. Aroma has some cloying esters, sugar and booze. Taste has toasted malt, some walnut and bitter, earthy finish. Medium body and carbonation. Its quite boozy and I dont get any barrel character.

(bottle) very hazy deep amber colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of blue cheese and sweatsocks, with lots of rotten fruit, some caramel and banana skins. flavour is mostly caramelized pale malts, ethanol and raisins, slightly tannic, with a hint of roasted beef and some herbal hops in the light roasted-bitter finish. heavy-bodied with soft carbonation.

Copper clear with little white head. Aroma is heavy malty stuff, my tasting group says dirty diaper and sadly they are right. Orange maybe. Taste is alcoholic bittersweetness. Spicy and alcoholic finish. Meh.
