12 oz bottle from the Brick Mason series. This one pours a cloudy, burnt orange color with just a reddish hue and topped by a thick head of off white foam that slowly settles to a thin film and leaving a sudsy wash across the glass. The aroma shows a good amount of depth in the malt base with darkly roasted caramel, brown sugar, toasted oak, vanilla, and sweet and bitter orange peel. There is not much in the way of hops to balance out the sweetness. The flavor follows suit with bitter and sweet oranges showing strong along with a touch of star anise spice and licorice followed by toasted oak, vanilla, and burnt caramel malt sweetness. The added anise spice tries to give some balance from the malt sweetness. Nearly full bodied on the palate with moderate carbonation that leads to a lengthy, sweet and slightly warming finish. There is lots of depth and complexity to this one, but I was hoping for a drier finish to help keep the residual sugars at bay. Still tasty stuff.

Bottle shared @ RBWG Tampa. Deep red with a small head. Quite malty and sweet. Caramelized nuts and strawberry fruit leather aromas. Candied apple. Taste is similar. Bottle shared on the bus during RBWG 2015. Pours unclear amber with a creamy, off-white head. The nose holds funky old berries and leaves. Medium sweet flavor, a little metallic, with some caramel and old fruits. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish with sticky sugars, leathery fruits, more caramel. OK. Bus beer, RBWG 2015. Clear amber maroon color. Aroma is mostly caramel. Taste has a bit of sourness.

Red Brick Old Stock Ale (purchased at Matherne’s in Laplace, La.) has a very thick, frothy, beige head, a somewhat murky, caramel-brown appearance, some tight bubble streams, and lots of sediment floating about, especially after swishing the bottom of the bottle. Lacing is thick and heavy. The aroma is of dank, old (this bottle is about three years old), bready ale. Maybe, some orange sweetness. Taste is of brown bread crust, sharp, yet not harsh, bitterness, orange, a shade of licorice, and some sourness. 12oz bottle, kind of hazy red orange color. Thin off-white head. Dots and bits of lace. Oxidization, some caramel malt, kind of peppery. Moderate bitter taste, lighter sweet, kind of peppery. Medium body. Smooth, kind of soft lighter carbonation. Kind of dry. Decent old ale it seems, but I can’t get past the oxidization. Pours a cloudy orange-brown with more than 1 finger of thick tan head. The head is durable, but turns a less appealing chunky with reduction.
Has the aroma of an oak-aged sour ale with a good bit of malt and a hint of spruce. Higher ABV becomes more evident with warming.
T: Plenty of oak flavoring; really too much of it for my tastes and too much given the strength of the other flavor components. Those other components include a bit of prune and over-ripe dark fruit, yeast, and a hint of charcoal. Starts sweet but ends sour. Both sour and bitter components linger on in the aftertaste.
M: Medium-full body; good carbonation; creamy smooth.
O: I approached this with trepidation, having opened a bottle just a few days earlier that I suspected had gone bad. It was a drain pour. This was much better but still a little challenging, in part due to the resemblance to the spoiled bottle. 12oz bottle pours a murky amber with some very thick, frothy, white head. Nose has a ton of malt and a ton of caramel, dried orange peel, some booze, some cream soda, some red rope licorice. Flavor has a fairly heavy amount of cherry, is it possible infection? Plenty of raisin too, some black peppercorn, some caramel, a little dried apple slices, some orange too. Full, sticky, spicy finish.
